New Yorkers: We are preparing for multiple extreme weather events this week.
A Flood Watch is in effect for the downstate regions. Heavy rain is forecasted to start this afternoon, with the possibility of three inches of rain per hour that could lead to flash flooding.
There is also the risk of severe thunderstorms, which could lead to high winds and downed power lines. This is all before remnants of Tropical Storm Debby are expected to hit New York starting on Friday and into the weekend.
We have mobilized every available resource to protect New Yorkers.
We have activated the Emergency Operations center and deployed 100 members of the National Guard. My administration has been in constant contact with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority - MTA and local officials as we prepare for flooding.
I urge New Yorkers to take this weather seriously. Keep monitoring your local forecasts and sign up for emergency alerts: alert.ny.gov
Remember: Never drive on flooded roads and avoid downed power lines.
