The School of Aerospace Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology is one of the oldest – and largest – educational programs of its kind in the country. Army personnel in aviation matters as early as 1917. A stand-alone department was formed in 1930 after receiving the seventh – and last – grant from the Daniel Guggenheim fund. Known then as the Daniel Guggenheim School of Aeronautics, its name was officially changed to the School of Aerospace Engineering on July 1, 1962.
Anthony "Tony" Frese, AE 1983, M.S. AE 1989, recently hand-delivered a generous endowment to support AE students in need. Accompanied by 13 family members - mostly Yellow Jackets - Frese shared how his upbringing was a catalyst to paying it forward.

Sponsored by Intelsat, they were tasked with helping the satellite company address the issue of spinning satellites. The team created an algorithm to identify spinning satellites and correct their positioning. The result, a winning solution for both OARS and Intelsat.

Recent AE alumnus Tarun Golla, AE 2022, M.S. AE 2023, won the Best M.S. Thesis Award from the Georgia Tech chapter of Sigma Xi, for his thesis, A Sliding-Window Matrix Pencil Method for Aeroelastic Design Optimization with Limit-Cycle Oscillation Constraints.
His advisor, Prof. Cristina Riso made sure to attend the award ceremony where Tarun received a special plaque and $500 for his achievement.

The Georgia Tech Design Build Fly team took first place overall in the Micro and Advanced Class at the SAE Design East Competition. This year’s competition included more than 55 teams from all over the world.

Georgia Tech researchers are teaming up with NASA to study bacteria on the International Space Station, aiding in the fight against antibiotic-resistant for long-duration space missions.
Professor Chris Carr and a team of researchers in the Planetary eXploration Lab (PXL), will work with astronauts living on the ISS as they collect air, water, and surface samples.

Elizabeth Qian has been awarded an Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) Young Investigator Program Award for a new research project titled, Inference-oriented Model Reduction: A New Paradigm.
She will receive $447,000 over three years to develop new algorithms for model reduction, which replaces expensive and complex engineering simulations with less compute-intensive approximations, which are cheaper and faster.

Exciting news! The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded Assistant Professor Christos Athanasiou the 2024 CAREER Award from the Mechanics of Materials and Structures (MoMS) program, one of the most prestigious awards for junior faculty members.
Through this award, Prof. Athanasiou envisions contributing to the field of engineering by focusing on the discovery of new failure mechanisms of sustainable composite materials. Such discoveries can enable the greater adoption of sustainable materials for various applications, including greener structures for aviation and space exploration.

Professor John Christian developed an optical navigation algorithm onboard a lunar lander that is headed to the Moon and expected to land later today, as a part of Intuitive Machines IM-1 Mission.
The algorithm is part of the Terrain Relative Navigation (TRN) software onboard Intuitive Machines' Nova-C lander Odysseus, which launched on February 15 and is attempting to become the first American spacecraft to land on the lunar surface since Apollo 17 in 1972

AE Assistant Professor Álvaro Romero-Calvo will serve as the principal investigator on a NASA Innovative Advanced Concepts (NIAC) project to research an alternative system through a new, more efficient water-splitting magnetohydrodynamic architecture that combines multiple functionalities with reduced subsystems. The new technology could result in up to a 50% mass reduction over current systems.

Mitchell Walker, the John W. Young Chair and professor in Georgia Tech’s Daniel Guggenheim School of Aerospace Engineering, has been selected as the School’s next chair. Walker is currently serving as the College’s associate dean of academic affairs and will begin his new role on Jan. 2, 2024.

Dalton Luedke has created a model engine that’s helping NASA lay the foundation for deep space exploration to the moon and Mars.
During a summer internship at the space agency, Luedke worked with a team exploring new rocket designs that are more powerful and weigh less. But his contribution — “sizable,” in NASA’s own words — is small enough to hold in your hand.
