Summer News: The Exploring the Arts, Exploring the Self camp allowed youth to connect and learn about the arts disciplines. It occurred July 15-19, 2024, and comprised youth in grades second through fifth.
Under the guidance of Roxanne Schroeder-Arce, Associate Dean of UTeach Fine Arts, UTeach Theatre 2024 Alums Valeria Najera and Yobany Pizano, and UTeach Theatre student Daijha Mainor, the students explored art, music, dance, and theatre. Each day, the group engaged the arts to present and perform ideas of who they are as individuals and as a community. ☀️ ☀️
UTeach Fine Arts is excited to share all the fantastic news of what faculty, students, and alums are up to this summer.
UTeach Dance students Hayley Jeansomme, Emily Figueroa, and Sarah Johnston were awarded an Arnhold Summer Fellowship from the Arnhold Foundation to attend the Dance Education Laboratory (DEL) Summer Intensive at 92NY in New York. The Three-Week Intensive includes week-long mini-intensives on the DEL dance framework, Dance for early childhood, and an embodied dance history of 92NY. Hayley, Emily, and Sarah arrived last week and have been enjoying every New York minute!
Meet Ana Maria Solis, our 2024 UTFA Outstanding Educator Award honoree. She is the current Orchestra Director at Austin High School in Austin, Texas. Throughout her 26 years of service, she has also directed at O. Henry Middle School, Lamar Middle School, and McCallum High School. Ana believes all her students can foster their ability through hard work and team collaboration. Her philosophy is that each member is vital to the continued success and support of the orchestra program. Ana's objective as a teacher is to allow students to express themselves through music.
Originally from Mexico City, Mrs. Solís has performed internationally with several orchestras in Asia, Latin America, and the United States. She holds a Bachelor's Degree in violin performance from the University of Southern Mississippi and a Master's Degree in Music Education from the University of Texas at Austin. UTeach Fine Arts extends our gratitude and congratulations to Ana on being the 2024 Outstanding Educator honoree. 🎼
We are thrilled that our annual UTFA Spring Celebration event was a success!
On May 1st, 2024, students, staff, faculty, program partners, and performers gathered to acknowledge the tremendous work of all those involved in UTeach Fine Arts, especially our graduating students, now ready to enter their own classrooms as fine arts teachers.
At the event, we honored Ana Maria Solis, our 2024 UTFA Outstanding Educator Award honoree. Ana Maria offered a heartfelt speech to our students with images of her own orchestra students at Austin High School. A warm thank you to Music teacher and alumnus AJ Marks and his 5th-grade students from UT Elementary School, who wowed our guests with their talented musical performances.
Congratulations to all our graduates, wishing you all the very best. Now, go out and make a difference as arts educators! Hook ’em!
UFASAC hit the road! UTeach Fine Arts UFASAC members participated in the 2024 Del Valle Fine Arts Fest on April 20th, 2024. These students took part in a panel that educated students, parents, and community members on what it is like to be part of the UTFA program at UT Austin. Students shared their experiences as college students and future fine arts educators. The fest also included music, art, dance performances, a live art show, crafts and activities. 🚐🤘🏽

This event featured various presentations by current UTeach Fine Arts students, including graduate, fourth-year and first-year students. Our sincerest congratulations to Dr. Donalyn Heise on being the 2024 Lowenfeld Award recipient. The Lowenfeld Award is given to extraordinary educators who have made significant contributions to the art education field. As the recipient of this award, Dr. Heise will present the Lowenfeld Lecture “Resilience in Art Education: Contexts, Concepts, and Connections” on Friday, April 5th, at the National Art Education Association Conference.
Preceding the national convention, the National Art Education Association Conference, April 4-6, 2024, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Dr. Christina Bain will chair the NAEA 2024 Research PreConvention. The NAEA 2024 Research PreConvention is a 1-day in-person event designed to ignite the research network in art and design education across our dynamic field. From elementary classroom practitioners to community educators to higher education professors, research presents a powerful range of possibilities for the future of schools, cultural institutions, and community contexts.

BIPOC PoP 2024 will bring together creatives, scholars, and industry leaders working in the comics, gaming, animation, and multimedia arts for 3 days to focus on strengthening community through the sharing of cutting edge creative critical knowledge making in the graphic storytelling arts.

From Feb 27-29, the Planet Texas 2050 Symposium: Resilience Research in Action will convene University faculty, researchers, students and community stakeholders dedicated to advancing interdisciplinary research on climate resilience, adaptation and environmental justice 🌎
