The Gupta-Klinsky India Institute and the Johns Hopkins Center for Bioengineering Innovation and Design - CBID are continuing their collaboration on the initiative with an educational experience focusing on the Indian healthcare system in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh.

Our visiting team of Hopkins students, Amanda Cheung, Emma Turner, Ishir Sharma, Mads Bundgaard Nørløv, Mark S. and Sabrina Chen were accompanied by GKII Program Manager Dr. Meghashish Sharma.

They were greeted by the Community Medicine and Family Medicine department at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), and were fortunate to have their guidance on other visits throughout the trip. This included traveling to a district tuberculosis unit to learn about how diagnosis, treatment, and adherence operated at the district level and speaking with a district TB officer to learn about the treatment protocols and platforms to monitor treatment adherence.

They also visited a block level primary health center, and multiple health and wellness centers where they met with lab managers, medical officers, treatment supervisors, community health officers, and ASHA workers before wrapping up the trip with a visit to a vaccination clinic hosted at a primary school in a rural village.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who welcomed them and contributed to this enriching experience!

As part of a promising research collaboration, Emily Kendall and Dr. Mithun K. Mitra from Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay are pushing the boundaries of tuberculosis research.

Supported by the Breakthrough Research Grant on Digital Health, co-funded by the Gupta-Klinsky India Institute at Johns Hopkins University and their research will be exploring how India’s digital health data can help improve TB treatments.

As Dr. Kendall explains, “This GKII breakthrough grant will allow our team from JHU and IIT-Bombay to explore how routinely collected electronic health data from India’s National Tuberculosis Elimination Program can be leveraged to amplify the impact of clinical TB research. We have been studying interventions to detect recurrent TB in a trial led by our co-investigator Dr. Jonathan Golub, but trial participation may itself increase recognition and detection of TB recurrence.”

By comparing study data with information from India’s National Tuberculosis Elimination Program, they hope to gain new insights into how TB interventions are working and how they impact patient health. We look forward to seeing how this innovative approach will advance the fight against TB!
