🔊 ASPRS and the ASPRS Foundation Announce New Lyman Ladner Memorial Scholarship

The Awards Committee of the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS) and the ASPRS Foundation announce the new ASPRS Lyman Ladner Memorial Scholarship for the 2025 application cycle. The scholarship is fully endowed at the initial amount of $2,000, with potential for the award amount to grow in future years.

Lyman Ladner retired from the USGS Western Mapping Center (WMC) in 1995 after 32 years of service. Early in his career, Lyman became very interested in photogrammetry and took a leave of absence to study photogrammetry at ITC in The Netherlands. Upon his return to USGS, Lyman received his BS in mathematics from San Jose State University and studied analytical photogrammetry under Professor James M. Anderson at UC Berkley. Lyman later served as Chief of the WMC Technology Office, where he and his team were responsible for development of the Digital Orthophoto (DOQ) production software.

This development led to WMC becoming the DOQ Center for the USGS and eventually to the multi-agency National Digital Orthophoto Program. He was awarded the US Department of the Interior’s Meritorious Service Award for his efforts and, in 2020, he and his development team were recognized nationally by ASPRS with the Outstanding Technical Achievement Award. Lyman retired as the Assistant Chief of the WMC Research and Development Office.

This scholarship, to be awarded annually, is designed to recognize Lyman’s contribution to the photogrammetry profession and his devotion to ASPRS as an emeritus member. The purpose is to encourage undergraduate and graduate level college students to pursue a course of study in surveying and photogrammetry leading to a career in the geospatial mapping profession.

An eligible candidate who wishes to be considered for the scholarship must submit an on-line application that includes the following items:

Cover description of the August issue of PE&RS.

Huge, thick ice sheets blanket much of the Antarctic continent. Amid all this ice, numerous volcanoes dot the landscape. Many are partially buried, with only their tops exposed above the ice sheet’s surface—that is, except for Mount Siple. This stately island volcano stands in full view, from sea level to its summit elevation of more than 3,100 meters (10,000 feet).

The OLI-2 (Operational Land Imager-2) on Landsat 9 captured the image of Mount Siple, cover, on February 26, 2024. Sunlight reflects from the snowy, icy surfaces, including the Getz Ice Shelf, which separates the volcano from mainland West Antarctica.

Mount Siple and other Antarctic volcanoes are located in a remote, extreme environment, making them a challenge for scientists to study and monitor. However, remote sensing can help. During the dark winter months, satellite sensors cannot collect the light needed for natural-color images like the cover image, but there are other ways to “see” in the dark.

This false-color image, above, was acquired by the VIIRS (Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite) on the Suomi NPP satellite. It shows a wider view of Mount Siple and mainland Antarctica on June 9, 2024, during the Antarctic winter. The image was overlaid on data from the Reference Elevation Model of Antarctica (REMA) to give a sense of the topography.

The colors in this image represent brightness temperature, which is useful for distinguishing the relative warmth (orange and pink) or coolness (purple and blue) of various features. Here, clouds appear cooler than the underlying icy surfaces.

Happy 4th of July!

07/01/2024

🎉 Hello July🎉

The July issue of PE&RS is now accessible to all ASPRS members!

While the Arabian Peninsula is known for its vast deserts of sand, the area also contains extensive fields of lava. The western half of the peninsula contains at least 12 volcanic fields known as harrats. One such field is the 14,000-square-kilometer (5,400-square-mile) Harrat Khaybar, one of the largest in Saudi Arabia.

Harrat Khaybar was formed by eruptions over the past 5 million years along a 100-kilometer vent system that runs north-south. According to the Smithsonian’s Global Volcanism Program, the volcanic field is still active, and eight lava flows are less than 1,500 years old. The last known eruption was reported in Harrat Khaybar in the 7th century.

Three of the youngest volcanic vents in Harrat Khaybar can be seen in this image, acquired by the OLI-2 (Operational Land Imager-2) on Landsat 9. These volcanoes resulted from different eruptive styles: Jabal Qidr is a stratovolcano (or composite cone); Jabal Abyad is a felsic dome; and Jabal Bayda is a tuff cone.

Jabal Qidr, in the northern part of the volcanic field, is built from several generations of dark, basaltic lava flows. Qidr has a 400-meter-diameter summit crater and exhibits the textbook cone shape of a stratovolcano. This is the only stratovolcano in the harrats of western Saudi Arabia.

Jabal Abyad, in the center of the image, was formed from a more viscous, silica-rich lava classified as rhyolite. While Jabal Qidr exhibits the cone shape of a stratovolcano, Jabal Abyad is a lava dome—a rounded mass of thicker, more solidified lava flows. Abyad’s dome reaches over 2,090 meters above sea level, the highest elevation amongst all the surrounding harrats.

To the west of Jabal Abyad is Jabal Bayda, a tuff cone volcano with a much larger summit crater measuring 1,400 meters in diameter. Tuff cones form from the interaction of rising magma with water. When heated rapidly by lava, water turns to steam and expands violently, fragmenting the lava into plumes of very fine grains of ash.

Abyad and bayda are the masculine and feminine words for “white” in Arabic. The lighter color of these mountains comes from the ash of comenditic lavas that are rich with silica. The white and beige colors stand out against the darker basaltic lava of Qidr.

💡 JUNE is here! Our members can access the June issue of PE&RS now 💡

A slow-moving storm system pummeled the United Arab Emirates and dropped more than a year’s worth of rain on some cities in April 2024. Heavy rain triggered flash flooding across eastern parts of the country, inundating roads and disrupting transportation.

The system first hit Oman on April 14 and continued to batter the UAE through most of the day on April 16. Michael Mann, a climate scientist at the University of Pennsylvania, told the Associated Press that three low-pressure systems formed a train of storms slowly moving along the jet stream—the river of air that moves weather systems—toward the Persian Gulf. The strong low-pressure system delivered multiple rounds of high winds and heavy rain to the northern and eastern parts of the country.

Some areas remained flooded on April 19, when Landsat 9 passed over the region for the first time since the storms. The image above (right), acquired that day with the satellite’s OLI-2 (Operational Land Imager 2), shows flooding in Jebel Ali, a town 35 kilometers (22 miles) southwest of Dubai. The image is false color (bands 6-5-3) to emphasize the presence of water, which appears blue. Flooding can be seen in the industrial area of Jebel Ali just south of the port and near the green resorts and parks south of Palm Jebel Ali.

Parts of Abu Dhabi, the UAE’s capital city, were also inundated by the storms. The Landsat 9 images above show the city and surrounding area on April 3 (left) and April 19 (right), before and after the storms. On April 19, water can be seen covering the Sheikh Zayed Road, a major thoroughfare that runs through Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Patches of flooded areas are also visible in Khalifa City and Zayed City, residential areas southeast of Abu Dhabi’s downtown.

The UAE’s National Center for Meteorology reported that eastern parts of the country measured up to 250 millimeters (10 inches) of rain in less than 24 hours. UAE, known for its dry desert climate, receives only about 140 to 200 millimeters (5.5 to 8 inches) of rainfall per year.

Dubai International Airport (northeast of these images) recorded 119 millimeters on April 16, which is 1.5 times its typical annual rainfall. The deluge temporarily halted flights at the airport, which is among the world’s busiest for international travel.

As of April 18, some of the UAE was working to recover from the flooding, according to news reports. Dubai’s international airport was reportedly still experiencing delays. NASA Earth Observatory images by Wanmei Liang, using Landsat data from the U.S. Geological Survey. Story by Emily Cassidy.
