Baton Rouge, La. – Seven Southern University College of Agricultural, Human and Environmental Sciences (CAHES) students and two faculty members are among over 1,000 participants from 28 countries and regions participating in the 2024 Global Youth Conference & China-U.S. Youth Camp.
The conference, themed “Sharing Youth, Enjoying the Future,” is being held in Beijing, China. The conference began on July 11, 2024.

Assistant Professor of Apparel Merchandising and Textiles, Dr. Samii Kennedy Benson, will oversee a new three-year project titled "Farm to Feminine Hygiene" where her and her students will use materials found on campus like wool, cotton, and even h**p to make safer, more sustainable disposable and reusable pads and liners. The project comes with a 600,000 grant that will help to build a new textile production lab.

New project developing safer and more sustainable period products After a recent study showing most tampons contain toxic heavy metals like lead and arsenic, Southern University is launching a new project to make feminine hygiene products safer and more sustainable.
During Level 1 Fashion and Business Laboratory (FAB Lab), campers created their very own hats, shorts, and bags. They also designed dresses made out of newspaper. The camp began on July 8 and ended on July 12 with their closing ceremony. Great job campers!

Quilt Design Summer Camp 2024 Closing Ceremony
Participants did a fantastic job during the two weeks as they stitched, pressed, designed, seam ripped, and quilted their quilts. They learned quilting techniques, chose quilt patterns, and enjoyed socializing with others that love the art of quilting.
Southern University is closed today for the national observance of . Normal operations resume Friday, July 5.
