Happy National Forensic Science Week!!
September 17th – 23rd is National Forensic Science Week!
Louisiana State Police (LSP) Crime Laboratory does exceptional work for law enforcement agencies, courts, and citizens throughout the state, and we want to showcase it!
Established in 1937, the LSP Crime Lab is the largest and oldest crime lab in Louisiana. What began as a modest operation with a single scientist in a small room has now expanded to occupy an impressive 52,000 square feet, housing a dedicated team of 132 professionals. Together, they strive to provide the most precise and prompt analysis of criminal evidence possible.
The LSP Crime Lab is a full-service crime laboratory offering a wide range of forensic analyses including Blood Alcohol, Bloodstain Pattern, CODIS DNA Database, Controlled Dangerous Substances, Crime Scene Investigation, DNA, Fire Debris, Fi****ms, Gunshot Residue, Latent Prints, Post and Ante-Mortem Toxicology, Serial Number Restoration, and Shoe, Tire, and Tool Mark Impressions.
Each year, the Crime Lab receives over 14,000 total cases in the areas of toxicology, drugs, DNA, crime scene investigation, bloodstain pattern analysis, fracture match, fire debris, fingerprints, fi****ms, and impressions. Furthermore, the Lab receives an impressive 18,000 evidence submissions annually for testing, amounting to over 50,000 individual items of evidence.
Experts from the laboratory are routinely called upon to testify in court as expert witnesses for these types of tests.
The Laboratory is always looking for qualified individuals to be a part of its important mission. Available Crime Lab job openings are posted on the Louisiana Civil Service website and can be found in the “Job Seekers” section. All positions will be posted and jobs listed are the only openings available at the Crime Lab at any given time.
Be advised that strict educational requirements must be met for most positions in the Crime Lab. The requirements are generally Chemistry or Biology degrees from accredited 4-year universities and vary by position. (Note: Criminal Justice degrees do not meet our requirements.) These requirements can also be found on the Civil Service website listed above under “Job Information and Test Finder.” You must meet these requirements to be considered for employment.
About National Forensic Science Week
The concept of a National Forensic Science Week was raised during a meeting of forensic leaders in 2013 as a way to recognize and advance quality forensic science. Organizations including the Major City Chiefs Association, the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the Association of State Criminal Investigative Agencies, the Major County Sheriff’s Association and the Consortium of Forensic Science Organizations immediately expressed support and partnered with the concept. Within a few months, National Forensic Science Week was transformed from a simple idea at a meeting to a true national event. This can only be explained by the importance of forensic science in modern criminal justice and the dedication of forensic professionals across the nation. Quality forensic science and those that provide these services deserve our appreciation and respect.
Be sure to stay tuned to all of our social media accounts, we will highlight different sections within the LSP crime lab throughout the week.
