THIS WEEKS CONVO- Sept. 9th
Please join us for our first Stephenson Memorial Concert of the fall semester on Thursday, 9 Sept. 2021 at 8 pm in Phelps Stokes. The performance features the multi-instrumentalist Joe Troop.
Joe Troop is hailing originally from Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The founder of the Grammy-nominated string band Che Apalache, Troop’s music is deeply embedded with and inspired by his activism. Borrowed Time is his first proper solo album. The worldly songs and instrumentals are influenced by his time spent living in Argentina as well as his upbringing as an openly gay bluegrass musician in rural North Carolina.
Please note: The concert is free & open to the public. Mask & covid-19 vaccination required. Livestream NOT available.
I hope you will be able to join us Thursday evening.
THIS WEEKS CONVO- Thurs. May 6th
Our last (virtual) spring convocation features New York Times opinion columnist and author Margaret Renkl on Thursday, May 6 at 7PM ET. In conversation with Berea’s own Silas House, Ms. Renkl will speak to us about The Link between Happiness and Creativity.
Our ancestors didn’t think of creativity as a side gig. A quilt was meant to keep a family warm. It was meant to give a new practical use to the unworn bits of worn-out clothes. But our family quilts were never simply warm and never simply practical. They were beautiful, and making them brought their makers happiness. Renkl, an author and contributing opinion writer for the New York Times, believes that expressing our own creativity—whether through painting or gardening or singing or dancing or writing or, yes, needlework—is one of the ways we bring meaning to our lives. Woods Lecture.

Join us for a conversation with 2016 Olympic bronze medalist in fencing, Ibtihaj Muhammad, the first American woman to compete in hijab. As a sports ambassador for the U.S. Department of State’s Empowering Women and Girls through Sport Initiative and named one of TIME magazine’s 100 Most Influential People, Ibtihaj is a self-described “change agent” and—as Mattel describes her— “shero” to young girls everywhere. In conversation with Berea College’s own Dr. M. Shadee Malaklou, Assistant Professor and Chair of Women’s and Gender Studies, Ibtihaj will speak with us about what it means to pursue what she describes in her memoir as “an unlikely American dream,” about how she navigates professional sports as a celebrity Black Muslim woman, about her feminist entrepreneurship as the founder of the modest clothing company Louella, and about her first children’s book, the New York Times Best Seller The Proudest Blue: A Story of Hijab and Family. In it, Ibtihaj insists—as Berea College does—that our differences are worth celebrating, writing, “My hijab is part of me.”

The Women of Appalachia Project has, for the past 10 years, been empowering female Appalachian writers and spoken word artists of all levels. This program not only commemorates the Nineteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution which was ratified 100 years ago, but also shows the many challenges women faced along the way and, more importantly, highlights how racism and white supremacy shaped the outcome. The singers say of their project:
“The musical journey Women Sing 100 depicts the evolution of voting rights, highlighting the stories and legacies of the many rarely heard voices, especially those from the African American community. Black and White, we come together to sing of our complicated struggle and claim our voices in this challenging time, in the hope of lighting a fire in our hearts to get out and VOTE this November!”

Accent on Christian Faith - The Willis D. Weatherford, Jr. Campus Christian CenterAt times, Christianity can seem to be anchored in "do not," "cannot", "should not", and "never." It is possible, though, that Christianity finds its best, most transformative energy, not through prohibitions but through reflections: "What if....?" "Could we...?" "Maybe I can..."
The convocation features a unique interview/conversation with former CCC director, now Birmingham public scholar, Rev. Gail Bowman. Rev. Gail will be sharing her thoughts on one of her favorite aspects of Christianity, which is the way that faith invites our questions and poses its own. We will consider some of your questions as well. Dr. Rosalie Richards “At no time in our history has the need been greater for connecting the work of the academy to the social and environmental challenges beyond the campus” (Boyer, 1990). Two decades after Boyer’s report, this statement has never been more true as higher education struggles to prioritize its goals in addressing the capacious challenges of the world. Science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), as a human process, has historically found an interesting place in society. And in the face of the coronavirus global pandemic, STEM and its role is being questioned as is scientific thinking. During the session, Dr. Richards will examine three distinct roles of STEM in a quest to answer the question “Why STEM Matters.” Science Convocation
You are invited to join our Berea College Convocation via Zoom!
