This year we had several students who were supported by AFR (African and African American Studies department) in their academic endeavors as Berea College students! These young scholar-activists were all recipients of scholarship funding provided by the Baskins Scholarship Fund! The Fund was established by retired Berea College AFR Professor Andrew Baskins and his wife Symerdar, to support Berea College students conducting research in areas specifically related to AFR. This academic year our recipients were: Mostaphe A. Mohamed, Said B. Maalim, Camille Johnson, Precious Brown, and Maryam Clay-Darden.

Mostaphe Mohamed and Said Maalim attended the African Business Conference held at Harvard University this past February of 2024. AFR majors Maryam Clay-Darden, Camille Johnson, and Precious Brown also received funds from the Baskins Scholarship to visit the Legacy Museum in Montgomery Alabama this past March. These young women used their time at the Legacy to research specific areas of interest within the field of African and African American Studies.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OUR BASKINS SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS RECIPIENTS!!

A video (https://fb.watch/qUbSpgasE8/) of Jim Embry’s discussion with Dr. J. V. Pimienta-Bey at the Carter G. Woodson Center on February 28th is housed on Jim Embry's page. Embry spoke to students about his legacy as a farmer, educator, and social activist for most of his adult life. Jim comes from a family whose unique pedigree intersects farming and the land, with African American history, and political activism. Jim’s own great grandfather D.B. Ballew brought the famed agricultural scientist Dr. George Washington Carver to Richmond Kentucky three times along with Dr. W.E.B. DuBois and Ida B. Wells-Barnet.
Embry dynamically engaged with the importance of the 179,000 African American men who served and fought within the Union army, African American farming cooperatives, and Dr. Goerge Washington Carver’s Bulletins. As well, as explaining his own family’s unique connection to Berea College. Further, he urged listeners to heal their connection with the land. He also extended the invitation for students and community members to participate in the Cumberland Seed Commons: Spring Convening (https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=10161506079300428&set=a.229500405427). The Convening will be held at Berea College April 20-23, 2024.
