In the early morning light she powered through with determination and strength. With her husband by her side she knelt on the bed and cried out as her little one slipped from her womb in a quiet rush. He yelled out in surprise and his beautiful cries filled the room as joy filled his parent’s faces.

I’m forever amazed at the beautiful intricacies of birth and so honored to witness it again and again

During this postpartum visit with Natalie, Aaron, and Elijah, we talked about burping and feeding techniques, the challenges that come with work resuming and how VITAL it is as new parents to simply give yourself grace as you settle into your new roles and as you try to figure out what works and doesn’t work for your baby.

We headed to the birth center amid strong frequent contractions. Mama got into the birth pool and almost immediately her water broke. She was calm, breathing deeply in and out and riding each strong wave. She planned on having her baby in the water at the center…until she wasn’t.

After days of labor, exhaustion hit and mama knew she needed some rest. She was ready for a change and together this couple decided that going to the hospital for an epidural was the best decision for them.

Her husband was so relieved to see that expression of anguish turn to pure bliss after an expertly placed epidural eased her discomfort and mama finally got some sleep.

Labor would continue for another 12 hours, with mama sleeping, squatting, kneeling, and basically being a badass birth goddess to bring a beautiful baby boy into the world.

Birth plans change, and that’s ok! Sometimes what we actually need is different from what we thought we would need, and this was an excellent example of a mama making that decision for herself 👏👏

So proud of Natalie and Aaron for showing me once again the amazing strength in birth.

Elijah Irvin was a surprise gender baby and the stars aligned because baby boy was born on his great grandpa’s birthday and named after him!

Happy International Women’s Day! Dream big ladies

Spent some quality postpartum time with one of my sweet families and brought them a homemade meal. We discussed the anxieties that come with venturing out for the first time, first bath tricks, and revisited feelings about baby’s birth.

What’s your postpartum advice for new parents?

Sometimes babies decide to come QUICK and you end up at a birth with your puppy pants and Dunder Mifflin shirt on, hair thrown up and messy, but incredibly grateful to have been able to make it in time to support a mama through her birth

This little man made his entrance about 1.5 hours after mamas contractions started and it was a rush for everyone to get to her home in time! 😆

What’s the fastest birth that you’ve had?

Baby girl, I’m SO happy that you are in this world. A big welcome to baby Lorrie and congratulations to mama Sarah and daddy Alex. These two were amazing and strong in the midst of a difficult delivery. I am so honored to have been their doula ❤️

💗 I am absolutely obsessed with the birth of this baby boy! I was honored to be able to step in at the request of our local midwives and support the birth of this family who didn’t have a doula.

💦 Mama was able to have a beautiful water birth and it was so special watching those first bonding moments as a family.

Swedish photographer Lennart Nilsson spent 12 years of his life taking pictures of the fetus Developing in the womb.

These incredible photographs were taken with conventional cameras with macro lenses, an endoscope and scanning electron microscope.

Nilsson used a magnification of hundreds of thousands and “worked” right in the womb. His first photo of the human fetus was taken in 1965.

I was sick with Covid this last week but I’m so grateful for all of the amazing doulas in the community like Sofia Doula Services, who supported this sweet family in my place.

Snuggling babies fresh into the world is such a special treat! This little man is seriously one of the cutest babes ever!

This is often a huge concern for mamas!

Answer: you might! It is very normal for someone to poo during the childbirth process. Why?

💩Changing hormones allow your muscles to loosen and can result in some time on the toilet

💩 Baby’s Position: Baby’s head eventually becomes very low and can put pressure on your re**um. Many mamas feel like they need to p**p when they experience this, and sometimes they do and sometimes they don’t

💩 Pushing: You will use the same muscles to push baby out as you do to go to the bathroom, so naturally, there may be a little bit of p**p during this stage

Pooping during birth is very normal and common, so try not to worry too much about it! Usually your healthcare team will dispose of it before you even notice! (Birth Partners, no need to inform mama that she just 💩 😆)

Poo doesn’t bother your birth team so don’t let it bother you! Just focus on bringing that sweet baby into the world! You got this!
