Join Bristol Ballet, alongside other local organizations, for Rhythm and Roots Children’s Day THIS Saturday! We will be performing excerpts of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, as well as fan favorite piece Sally Ann, set to music from the 1927 Bristol Sessions.

Children’s Day is a FREE event at Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion (it is at Anderson Park, outside the festival footprint). The community is invited to enjoy games, crafts, and performances as we celebrate Bristol’s music heritage. You do NOT need a ticket to Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion to attend this event. Children must be accompanied by a parent/guardian at all times.

Make sure to bring the kiddos on down to Anderson Park in downtown Bristol, TN-VA on Saturday, 9/14 from 10am-1pm for this FREE community event!

As we get our 2024-2025 season started, it's time for another class spotlight! While Bristol Ballet focuses on quality classical ballet training, we also offer Contemporary Dance with faculty member Hailey Byington. Two levels of Contemporary are offered at Bristol Ballet – Beginning Contemporary for ages 8 and up, and Intermediate/Advanced Contemporary, both of which are featured in our spring productions.

Contemporary dance is a style of expressive dance that combines elements of several dance genres including ballet, jazz, and modern dance. Named “Contemporary” because it describes a genre that developed during the mid-20th century it and has since grown to become one of the dominant genres for formally trained dancers throughout the world, with particularly strong popularity in the U.S. and Europe. It is also a wonderful supplement to the classical ballet dancer's training!

Bristol Ballet is excited to announce that Keith Lee’s piece, “A Theme in Search of a Movie,” is officially part of our permanent repertoire. The piece was set on Bristol Ballet dancers at our 2024 summer intensive a few weeks ago. We can’t wait to perform it again for audiences soon! Stay tuned for information about where you can see this amazing piece, set to the music of Eddie Harris, and in the meantime, enjoy some photos of the filming of the piece at the historic Paramount in downtown Bristol!

Mr. Lee hails from the Bronx, NY and began training at the High School of Performing Arts in NYC. In 1969, Mr. Lee was the first Black soloist to join the American Ballet Theatre and he went on to dance with Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre. His repertory included the choreography of such luminaries as Alvin Ailey, George Balanchine, Agnes DeMille, Lar Lubovitch, Jerome Robbins, and Antony Tudor, as well as performance credits in theater and broadway musicals. He has served as ballet master for Ailey and Dallas Black Dance Theatre, and Capitol Ballet, and has been teaching and choreographing for dance companies across the world. Mr. Lee has called Central Virginia home since 1994, and he was named Artist Laureate by the City of Lynchburg where he continues to work as a freelance choreographer, master teacher, and performing arts coordinator. He has shared his vision and 50-year dance legacy with the Charlottesville Ballet since 2008, and he serves as Resident Choreographer and Director of Diversity & Inclusion for the entire organization. Charlottesville Ballet also has the The Keith Lee Scholarship Fund (KLSF), a new initiative to provide scholarships to Charlottesville Ballet Academy (CBA) specifically for young men and dancers from diverse demographic backgrounds.

We are excited to continue our partnership with Mr. Lee and continue to perform this amazing choreographic work!

It's not too late to join us for adult ballet! Classes begin this week.

Everyone is welcome to try our Adult Ballet class, even complete beginners. Try something new and get some exercise while having fun!

Adult Ballet is a relaxed version of a traditional ballet class, with stretching, barre work, and center work. Each class is tailored to the dancers in the class, and makes sure to focus on building ballet basics while having fun. Exercises can also be modified for injuries, etc., so the class is truly for everyone!

Bristol Ballet is proud to include the American Ballet Theatre National Training Curriculum, a breakthrough 9 level program that combines high quality artistic training with the basics of dancer health and child development. The ABT® National Training Curriculum consists of a comprehensive set of age-appropriate, outcome-based guidelines to provide the highest quality ballet training to dance students of all ages and skill levels. Pre-Primary through Level 3 will be taught by ABT® Certified Teachers, our Artistic and School of Ballet Director Moira Frazier Ostrander and Artistic and Development Director Amanda Hairston, who have successfully completed the ABT® Teacher Training Intensive in Pre-Primary through Level 3 of the ABT® National Training Curriculum.
