We are not one size fits all. As you engage in finding support ask questions and donโt let a passionate pitch and clever marketing get the best of you. You DESERVE to work with someone who was willing to study and do the work to support you with excellence and accountability.
Even as therapists, we are not skilled in everything. Thereโs a reason we are educated, licensed, trained, and required to spend thousands of hours in supervision.
For the record, I have several dietitians in my life that I love and respect. This is not a homogeneous statement. However, the recent trend of being all things to all people in the areas of mental wellbeing is concerning.
The potential risks of dietitians acting as therapists include:
1. Inadequate training: Dietitians may not have the specific training required to address mental health issues effectively. Providing therapy without the necessary qualifications can result in ineffective treatment and potentially harm the client.
2. Ethical considerations: Without proper training and expertise in therapy, dietitians may not be equipped to maintain professional boundaries, handle complex emotional issues, or navigate ethical dilemmas that can arise in a therapeutic relationship.
3. Misdiagnosis and inappropriate treatment: Dietitians may lack the skills to accurately diagnose mental health conditions or provide appropriate treatment. This can lead to misdiagnosis, ineffective treatment, or exacerbation of mental health issues.
Awareness is a powerful way to widen our lens and be empathetic of the experiences of others. For many, Memorial Day will not be filled with boat rides and barbecues. Itโs not an opportunity for rest that comes on the shoulders of lives lost.
The pain has already begun to rise, because in truth, it never leaves. Many veterans and loved ones are battling through the memories, the flashbacks, and the emptiness.
As I reflect, I want to pause ahead of the day and send my thoughts and prayers to those who have lost someone they love.Their sacrifice (and yours) does not go unnoticed.
