"When you phoned home from California
to tell me you had started
A brilliant globule of blood
rolled out over the surface of the desert
up and down the Continental Divide
through the singing prairies
parting the Mississippi
leaping the Delaware Water Gap
until it spilled into this tall red kitchen
in Rocky Hill, New Jersey
where it skittered across the linoleum
and cracked into hundreds of little faceted jewels.

I will not diminish the day with labeling
I will not say foolishly
"now you are a woman"
I will never tell you
"don't talk to strangers"

because we are each of us strangers
one to another
mysterious in our bodies,
the connection between us
ascending like separate stone wells
from the same dark waters
under the earth

But tonight you delight me like a lover
so that my thigh muscles twitch
and the ni***es of my breasts
rise and remember
your small mouth
until I am laughing to the marrow of my bones
and I want to shout
Bless you, my daughter, bless you, bless you;
I have created the world in thirteen years
and it is good."

Moon Time can be more than physical releasing. We can tune into our deeper selves, take time to rest and reflect, and find ways to honor our selves through the process each month. Incorporating self care practices or other rituals can make Moon Time something special, rather than an inconvenience or dreaded time of the month.

Why FREE FLOW?

We believe all women and girls should have easy and affordable access to feminine hygiene and period products. We also believe that it’s time for the stigma and misinformation around menstruation to be a thing of the past!

FREE FLOW is a program that was created by the women of The Chattanooga Red Tent, a women’s circle and community that gathers monthly to prioritize self care and celebrate the cycles, seasons, and stories of women. The Red Tent Movement is inspired by the Moon Lodge Tradition. In cultures, both past and present, there are such traditions and rituals that offer women time and space to rest, nourish themselves, and support each other during “moon time”. We think that embracing one’s cycle and celebrating the power of the female body is a beautiful and empowering thing to do. However, we know a woman cannot focus on extra self care and these other aspects of menstruation when she’s struggling just to buy feminine hygiene products! We’ve read that women in America are almost 40% more likely to face poverty than men. Pads, tampons and other needed products are just one more expense- sometimes an expense that women cannot afford when struggling financially. That is why we created FREE FLOW. As women, we are in this together. We partner with local women-focused organizations to provide products to their service recipients, and when we have enough supplies we also provide products directly to women who reach out to us needing them. No questions asked!
