In light of the recent killings of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, Regis Korchinski-Paquet, George Floyd, and the racial profiling of Christian Cooper, we want to provide space for students to process, grieve, and find solace in community.

The event will include words of remembrance, an opportunity for students to offer brief testimonials, and provide resources and skills for dealing with racial trauma. All undergraduate students and graduate/professional students are welcome and encouraged to participate.

Violence against Black people continues to plague our country. Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, Regis Korchinski-Paquet, George Floyd are some of the most recent names on a long list of Black men, women and trans people taken from their families and communities far too soon, not to mention the racial profiling of Christian Cooper. We are outraged, and though this message runs the risk of falling short, we refuse to be silent.

We will continue to engage the University community and support student‐driven initiatives in an attempt to raise critical consciousness. At the moment, our priority is offering support to you – our students – in any way that we can.

We are working with campus partners to host a virtual space for students this week. In the meantime, please don't hesitate to reach out to any member of our team if we can be of assistance. ✨Ariana Brown is a q***r Black Mexican American poet from San Antonio, Texas, with a B.A. in African Diaspora Studies and Mexican American Studies. She is the recipient of two Academy of American Poets Prizes and a 2014 collegiate national poetry slam champion. Ariana, who has been dubbed a “part-time curandera,” is primarily interested in using poetry to validate Black girl rage, in all its miraculous forms.✨

Radically Tender: Embracing our own softness can feel impossible in a world which tells us we must develop hardness in order to survive. How can we allow ourselves to find the power in tenderness, in softness? This workshop explores the capabilities of tenderness, focusing on self-care and communal care, through writing exercises and group dialogue.

Apply for Reflections!

Reflections is a documentary photo project exploring what solidarity means to UChicago. Using photos and captions, students will explore questions around solidarity, identity, and belonging on campus.

The resulting photo collections will then be displayed throughout campus beginning Week 8 of Spring Quarter. Photo collections can be anonymous. Reflections is part of a larger project entitled UChicago Envisoning Solidarity.

All College and Graduate/Professional students are invited to participate. The deadline to apply to participate in Reflections has been EXTENDED to Monday, April 3rd at 5pm. Apply now!
