Topic of the day : CONTRACEPTION .
in our office we believe that each patient is unique and has her own needs and preferences , so we always do our best to give information about all contraceptive methods and then allow the patient to take time and decide which works best for her .
starting from the least effective :
1. the NO METHOD : this method has 85% in 100 to get pregnant . and this doesn't mean pre-ejaculation withdrawal nor counting days for your ovulation . it simply means having s*xual in*******se without any kind of caution .
2. more effective methods include but not limited to , barrier methods and this includes :
- male condom .
- female condom .
- diaphragm .
- sponge .
- cervical cap .
. withdrawal .
. spermicide .
. fertility awareness based methods .
these methods are better than the NO METHOD mentioned above , but still you have about 12 to 18 % chance to get pregnant in 100 .
3. Hormone based methods : the effectiveness of this method comes basically from having hormones . the chances of getting pregnant using this method are close to 1 - 6 % in 100 .
- OCP ( oral contraceptive pills , some contain only progesterone , some has both estrogens and progesterone ) .
- Patch .
- Ring . ( known by the patients as nova ring , but this is not the only ring available )
- Shot . ( known by patients as depo shots ) these are usually administered every 3 months .
4. this category cant be classified under hormonal or barrier , because some of the methods used in this category have both barrier and chemical features .
- IUD ( intrauterine device ) . IUD can be made of copper and can also have a hormonal releasing capacity . each has it's own indications and contraindications .
- Implants : these are usually made of plastic and they also release hormones to prevent pregnancy . the implant is usually placed in the inner side of the patient's upper arm .
- Male and Female surgical sterilization procedures : these are usually permanent methods . in very rare cases microscopic surgeries can be done to regain fertility , but if you are considering this method you should have in mind that it is most likely irreversible .

Side Effects :
- Side effects associated with Copper IUD include:
• Bleeding between periods
• Cramps
• Severe menstrual pain and heavy bleeding

- Side effects associated with depo porvera :
• changes in menstrual periods,
• weight gain,
• nausea,
• stomach cramping or pain,
• bloating,
• dizziness,
• headache,
• tiredness,
• drowsiness,
• irritability,
• breast tenderness,
• decrease in breast size,
• acne,
• hair loss,
• decreased s*x drive,
• hot flashes,
• joint pain, or
• injection site reactions (irritation, pain, skin changes, or a hard lump).

- side effects of OCP :

• intermenstrual spotting
• nausea
• breast tenderness
• headaches and migraine
• weight gain
• mood changes
• missed periods
• decreased libido
• vaginal discharge
• changes to eyesight for those using contact lenses

DR.deeb Alshahrour . ( head manager )
Dr. Adeeb Alshahrour, M.D., F.A.C.O.G. graduated from medical school on August 1994. He completed his internship in OB/GYN thru July 1999-June 2000. Then completed his training in Obstetrics and Gynecology from Cook County Hospital in Chicago, IL. Dr. Adeeb Alshahrour is fluent in Arabic, English and Spanish languages. Practice in Illinois and Indiana since 2004, currently he is affiliated with Presence Health System community first medical center and Saint Anthony Hospital .
Dr. Alshahrour enrolled in research in OB/GYN in multiples schools and Universities including University of Texas Southwestern Medical School at Dallas. In 2005 Dr. Alshahrour joined the University of Guadalajara in Mexico for Urology Gynecology training, where he had opportunity to perform incontinence and pelvic prolapse surgeries.
