That’s a wrap on Reunion Weekend 2024! The Law School welcomed alumni back to campus for a weekend of fun, friendship and a full schedule of programming and parties.
The incredible career of Prof. Martin H. Redish was celebrated during a ceremony at the Law School last Friday, which recognized the widely-cited legal scholar for his 50 years of teaching, scholarship and mentorship. Prof. Redish has made tremendous contributions to the Law School and legal profession, and is one of the 35 most cited legal scholars of all time. His career includes 19 books, over 110 scholarly articles and 23 Supreme Court sites or quotes, among other accolades.
Friends, family, colleagues and current and former students of Prof. Redish attended the event, providing remarks ranging from hilarious anecdotes to awestruck praise to deeply heartfelt thanks.
The program included remarks from a renowned group of speakers that included Dean Hari M. Osofsky, Northwestern President Michael Schill and Provost Kathleen Hagerty, Carter G. Phillips (MA '75, JD '77), Dr. Andrea Matwyshyn (JD ’99, PhD ’05), Judge Robert M. Dow Jr., Prof. Jim Pfander, and President Emeritus Morty Shapiro. Finally the Law School community enthusiastically welcomed Prof. Redish to the stage, who graciously thanked the community for honoring him, stating “I only hope I continue to bring honor to the school I love so much.”
During the program, Dean Hari Osofsky announced that on behalf of his tremendous impact to the Law School that LM212 would be now known as Marty Redish Hall. Prof. Redish, along with his wife Caren and daughters Elisa and Jessica unveiled Prof. Redish's official portrait, which will hang in the hall.
Thanks to the Northwestern Pritzker Law community for making this day both special and memorable. We’re excited to celebrate Prof. Redish’s 51st year of teaching at the Law School, and look forward to many, many more.
Yesterday the Law School community gathered in Thorne Auditorium for the 2024 Knox Conversation, a public event series established by the Knox family focusing on public debate and respectful discourse.
Titled “America, 2024, and a Political Reckoning?”, the discussion featured two of America’s most incisive and engaging political practitioners—Paul Begala and Michael Steele—with moderator Prof. Jason DeSanto.
Examining political reckonings and accountability, the panel explored what plagues us as a nation in an off the cuff, light-hearted discussion with plenty of laughs.
Begala and Steele recounted the unconventional paths that brought them to a career in politics, highlighting both the benefits of a legal education and learning about impartiality, regardless of one’s political affiliation. Finally, the two spoke at length on the 2024 election, divisiveness within the country and the negative rhetoric of the Trump campaign.
Special thanks to our esteemed panelists and all those that made this fantastic event possible!
Today at 3 p.m., Prof. Martin H. Redish will be honored with a program and reception at the Law School—commemorating his remarkable 50-year career and his continued work with students.
