The leadership and staff of Safer Foundation are deeply saddened by the announcement of the passing of Dr. Dennis Deer, a dedicated leader, and Commissioner of Cook Countyβs 2nd District since 2017. We extend our condolences to his wonderful wife and children, keeping them in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Dr. Deer was a committed therapist and counselor who passionately advocated for mental health. Dennis was one of the key advocates working alongside Congressman Danny K. Davis advocating for legislative change and funding to support returning residents. His efforts with Rep. Davis led to the passage of the Second Chance Act which has helped millions of returning residents across the nation receive the second chance they so desperately needed. Commissioner Deer tirelessly represented the 2nd District, covering areas from parts of the South Side to downtown Chicago, addressing critical issues including healthcare, education, economic development, employment and training, reentry support, and affordable housing. His profound passion and relentless dedication have left a mark on our community. Dr. Deerβs legacy will continue to inspire and impact us all.
