At SIAM CSE 2017 in Atlanta I had the joy of meeting up with alumnus Mike McCourt, former Illinois Tech prof Greg Fasshauer, and Vice Dean Xiaofan Li. Mike was telling attendees about his company SigOpt and the opportunities in that sphere
We are excited to announce that registration is now open for the Chicago Area SIAM Student Conference (CASSC) 2017! CASSC is an annual event jointly organized by the IIT, UIC, and Northwestern student chapters of SIAM (Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics), and is being hosted by Northwestern this year. It is a one-day conference open to undergraduate and graduate students from all fields with an interest in applied mathematics.
CASSC acts as a showcase for student research, and consists of a large number of brief (20-25 minute) student-led technical presentations and poster presentations, as well as plenary speakers and an applied mathematics career panel. You may register just to attend, or to give a presentation, yourself. If you are interested in seeing what your peers are working on, or would like some presentation experience in a low-pressure environment, then this event is definitely for you.
Here are the event details:
Date: Saturday, April 15
Location: Northwestern University
Free lunch.

Registration is free, but required for all attendees.
Registration Deadline: Wednesday March 22 for presenters, Monday April 3 for general attendance
If you do decide to give a presentation, bear in mind that your audience will have widely varying backgrounds, so please try to make it understandable for a general audience. Visit the CASSC 2017 website at for more information. We hope to see you at the conference!
Hello All! We hope that you had a pleasant break. We recently posted some beginning-of-semester announcements on our HawkLink page. If you are not already signed up for SIAM on HawkLink, please do so since we use our membership roster as our email list for sending announcements. Just sign into HawkLink and search for "SIAM".
Importantly, there are some deadlines for the SIAM Annual Meeting that are rapidly approaching. This is an annual conference attended by professional applied mathematicians from around the world. It provides an opportunity to meet other professionals in your field, to see what current research is taking place, and even to present your own work. This year it is taking place in Pittsburgh, PA, July 10-14. If you are registered as a student member you may be eligible for a student travel award, covering the registration fee as well as travel and lodging costs.
The deadline for travel award applications is January 27, while the deadline for lecture and poster submissions is February 1. Travel award preference tends to go to students who will be giving a presentation. The travel award submission requires a statement of purpose, a current CV, and a recommendation from your advisor, so if you do plan on applying, please do so soon.
