Yesterday was World Hepatitis Day, as designated by the World Health Organization (WHO) – an opportunity to raise awareness and support hepatitis prevention, diagnosis, and treatment efforts. The World Health Organization says that “low coverage of testing and treatment is the most important gap to be addressed in order to achieve global elimination goals by 2030.”

Dr. Basmattee Boodram, Associate Professor in the School of Public Health, has been engaged in research among people who inject drugs, the population driving hepatitis C incidence in the United States for almost 20 years. Dr. Boodram’s National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded recent study of young people who inject drugs and their drug use networks in Chicago and surrounding suburbs show an annual hepatitis C incidence of 10%. At particularly high risk are young people who inject in abandoned buildings in the outdoor drug market areas on Chicago’s West Side.

Dr. Boodram has also been actively working on developing realistic, empirical data-driven computational models for discovering strategies needed to reach the WHO’s goal of HCV elimination.
