New art by UIC alum and internationally recognized artist Tom Friedman just dropped at the UIC-Halsted station's Peoria Street entrance. Located at a hotspot for travelers and commuters alike between UIC's bustling campus and the vibrant neighborhood of Greektown, the sculpture depicts Hermes, the Greek messenger god, in a modern world, playfully balancing take-out containers on his head.

UIC is proud to announce the Maternal Health Research Center of Excellence, a new center funded by an $11 million, six-year grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) that will build on decades of research, training and education, clinical care and community partnerships at UIC to reduce health inequities in maternal morbidity and mortality.

This fall, UIC's oldest college is getting a new name - the Herbert M. and Carol H. Retzky College of Pharmacy - honoring the Retzkys' legacy and substantial commitment to the college.

We are excited to share the University of Illinois Chicago College of Pharmacy will become the Herbert M. and Carol H. Retzky College of Pharmacy. University of Illinois Board of Trustees approved the new name on July 11, and it honors the Retzkys’ legacy and long-term, substantial commitment to the college.

The College will formally celebrate the Retzkys and their legacy on September 13, 2024, one day after the 165th anniversary of our founding. Please stay tuned for more information about how you can celebrate with us on that day.

Fourth-year UI COM student Aisha Suhaiba has been selected to participate in the NFL Diversity in Sports Medicine Pipeline Initiative, completing a month-long internship with the Chicago Bears. During her rotation, Aisha will observe and participate in the care of Chicago Bears players directly under the supervision of orthopedic team physicians, primary care team physicians, and athletic trainers. Meet the newest Flames - four peregrine falcon chicks nesting at University Hall 🐣 Peregrine falcons have nested at UIC since 1999, and it's estimated there are only 15 pairs in the Chicago area.

Thank you to everyone who participated in Earth Month 2024. It began with weekly campus sustainability tours and tabling days at Student Center East, which offered a variety of activities for all UIC community members. Comprehensive tours of the university’s arboretum highlighted the vital role of trees in advancing campus sustainability goals.
The month also included pop-up collection events for recycling personal electronics and a biking seminar that addressed essential bicycling skills and how to build rider confidence while promoting sustainable transportation options. In addition, a food recovery informational session showcased the university’s commitment to minimizing food waste and promoting sustainable practices.
We are grateful to everyone who took the time to participate in an Earth Month event and learn more about how we all can help make UIC a more sustainable university.

“As an immigrant and a mother of a second-generation Asian American, I want to understand and support the younger generation,” says Haeyoon Chung, who recently graduated with her doctoral degree from the UIC College of Education.

Before moving to the U.S. in 2011 at age 30, Chung was a mental health counselor in South Korea, where most of her clients were college students. At UIC, she focused her dissertation on the discrimination faced by Asian Americans during the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on their mental health after a student confided in her about their own fear and anxiety around this issue.

“My grandpa always told me that if you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life. And the thing I’m truly passionate about, on the deepest level, is nature," says Haley Dahl, who recently graduated from UIC’s College of Engineering.

Dahl found her perfect fit in UIC’s civil, materials and environmental engineering program, balancing her rigorous coursework with her responsibilities as a student-athlete on the UIC Division I track and field team.

This fall, Dahl returns to UIC to pursue her master's degree in civil engineering while working for a Chicago civil engineering firm. She’ll also complete her last year of athletic eligibility for the Flames.
