Dr. Nikhil Verma partnered with the University of Michigan to offer 60 undergraduates a bird’s eye view into orthopedic surgery via a live, virtual operating room experience.
The program was developed at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic through the University of Michigan College of Literature, Science, and the Arts Opportunity Hub. This new model has offered incredible opportunities — including reaching more undergraduate students and targeting women and underrepresented minorities, who account for less than 3% of physicians in sports medicine.
“I know from my own path how pivotal real-life experience can be to inspire students to choose a career path, and I am thrilled to help offer that through the University of Michigan,” Dr. Verma says. “The virtual surgery program has turned into an incredible pathway to reach a much larger audience of students.”
