Historic Smithfield / Virginia Tech

Go Hokies! Today's game has some historic collegiate cousins connections. Most people realize the connections the Hokies have to the Preston Family of Southwest Virginia. The original Institute that eventually evolved into our beloved Virginia Tech was even named for a Preston, William Ballard Preston. It was a Methodist boys school so it also had the name of a revered minister attached to it as well. The Preston & Olin Institute dates to 1851, but most know its story starting in 1872, which is the date chiseled in Hokie stone across campus. William Ballard Preston's cousin William Preston Johnston has connections to Tulane University. Johnston was the first president of that institution. He was the son of General Albert Sidney Johnston and Henrietta Preston Johnston. Henrietta spent her youth living in what is now Pulaski County. She was the daughter of William Preston Jr. and Caroline Hancock Preston, who for a period of time owned and lived on the Robinson Tract of land given to them by William's father, Colonel William Preston of Smithfield. William Preston Johnston survived the Civil War and in the post war years was part of the administration at Washington and Lee before accepting the presidency at Louisiana State University. That university, with a private gift by merchant Paul Tulane, became in 1884 Tulane University with President William Preston Johnston to lead it forward. Rev War Colonel William Preston's descendants influenced many institutions of learning throughout the nation, but it is fun to share their history on days like today when they are again connected. We hope they have a safe Military Bowl. And once again, Go Hokies!!
