How do you plan for rest? ๐๏ธ ๐ด
Whenever there is a 5th Wednesday in the month, I cancel my live yoga class so I can take a break to recharge my batteries.
Yesterday I would have normally been prepping, teaching my yoga class and then editing and uploading the class video.
Instead I laid in bed and reading a book and then took a long walk. ๐ ๐ถ๐ฝโโ๏ธ
I started doing this when I realized I was getting depleted by the weekly grind of teaching class. (I ๐ ๐ ๐ teaching yoga, btw. I still need a break sometimes.)

Open ๐ prevents burnout?
One of the common symptoms of burnout is "depersonalization," or having a lack of empathy for others.
I don't know about you, but when I start getting callous and uncaring toward others, my relationships (and many other things) suffer.
An antidote I use is ๐-centered mediation.
Check out my latest 1-minute video where I guide you through the heart-centered breath meditation, Dvadashanta.
This quick, empathy boosting practice will help you find reclaim your ๐ amidst the chaos:
How about listening to your body? ๐๐ป
In my yoga classes, I always encourage people to listen to what they need and adjust the practice.
But today, I'm taking that next level and inviting students to direct ME with their needs. ๐ง๐ฝโโ๏ธ
I'm really excited to teach today's student choice class. Let's see where our bodies lead us. ๐ฃ
I'll check back in and let you know how it goes!
P.S. If you want to listen to your body and learn to really, truly rest, get a free class pass to one of the weekly restorative yoga classes included in the free version of the Defy the Trend burnout recovery community membership: https://bit.ly/3x95dLw
The faces on my Zoom screen were โจ glowing. โจ
I had the pleasure of co-leading a mini retreat in which I taught a restorative yoga class that led into a conversation about how to incorporate more rest into their schedules and HOW to get more rest once they do it.
I'm sorry I didn't get a Zoom photo of their amazing faces after our sessions, but rest assured they were lighter and happier.

๐ Stepping back to name your values and priorities and do a little planning can make the difference between chaos and ease this summer.
Iโm super excited to host the Summer Schedule Management Workshop on May 3 with my friend and fellow burnout recovery coach, Valerie Friedlander.
"Storytelling and breath are unifying ..."
My friend Tecca Thompson, a somatic storyteller, graced the Defy the Trend group coaching space today.
It was ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ.
Coaching transformed into storytelling in which we recalled times when we were deeply cared for.
Which reminds us how to continue caring for ourselves and creating caring spaces for others.
This is what a rest revolution looks like!

๐ง April 1 - 30: 30 Days of Rebellious Rest gives you a short, daily reminder to rest using one of seven types of rest. (Betcha didn't know there was seven! ๐) This is free.

30 Days of Rebellious Rest Push back against grind culture with 30-days of rebellious rest. Explore the seven types of rest to learn what you need most.
It's SUCH a busy week, especially for my pastor friends.
Here's a little something that may help you get through when you're overwhelmed ๐:
1๏ธโฃ Think about the project you need to get done.
2๏ธโฃ Brainstorm everything you need to do to get it done.
3๏ธโฃ Take a look at all those things. Breathe.
4๏ธโฃ Pare the list down to only what is ESSENTIAL.
5๏ธโฃ Then write down the stuff that would be good to do, but not absolutely necessary.
Do the essential things.
๐ THEN when that's all done, register for "How to Renew" -- my online spring/post-Easter restorative yoga celebration.
The practice will settle your energy, allowing you to deeply rest. ๐ด
I have online tickets and limited in-person tickets if you're in the Columbus, Ohio area.
Part of recovering from burnout is learning HOW to rest.
Most of us don't know how because we are socialized to power through, to constantly work.
You can start your restful journey on Monday, April 1.
I'm leading a restorative yoga session that will:
โข settle your scattered energy with very accessible, gentle movement,
โข put the season into perspective with guided journaling,
โข position your body for rest with restorative yoga poses (the laying-around kind) and
โข offer you deep relaxation with guided meditation.
Take two hours to deeply rest. I have online tickets and limited in-person tickets if you're in the Columbus, Ohio area.
Maybe it's not either/or, but both/and.
I bought my first paper planner in decades just recently. AND I still love using my digital calendar and to do list.
During every quarterly planning session I encourage people to create an organization system that works for THEM, not for someone else.
Wanna join us Thursday for Defy the Trend's first quarterly planning session of 2024!
You'll beat burnout with group coaching, time management and restorative yoga.
In this busy season leading up to Easter, do you struggle to settle down and rest?

My new page for the Defy the Trend anti-burnout coaching community is LIVE!
This effort did not happen by myself. I had the help of Becky Mollenkamp's Last 90 and First 90 accountability coaching groups including such awesome humans as Kriss Judd, Martha L. Lumley, DBA and many more. To my friend Ellis Arnold who puts up with random, frantic texts from me when I think I've broken my site and then coaches me through it. And Nicole Pickens for making stellar graphics. If I forgot to mention you in this list, please forgive me. I am VERY grateful for all your help!
This is a good lesson on how founding a business is NOT a solo operation, even if we call ourselves solopreneurs -- there's so much help and support along the way!

Have you been wondering where I've been?
I've been a little quieter on social media because of two things:
1. I'm prioritizing in-person networking to build strong relationships. The photos here are from the community gathering I attended on Monday at The Ohio State University. Thanks to Tracy Stuck, VP for Student life for the invite and the photos!
2. I'm working on some significant my website MUCH easier to read so you can learn to do less in order to THRIVE! Stay tuned for some new pages about my Defy the Trend coaching community where we beat burnout with group coaching, time management and restorative yoga.
Shameless ask: Are you having a gathering in Columbus, Ohio or anywhere online? Please invite me, I"ll probably attend!

I'm sick of all the self-improvement ads and posts telling you that you need to do more, be more, accomplish more. ๐

But that slower season doesnโt actually arrive. ๐
Because you just roll along into the next hyper-busy season. ๐๐ฝโโ๏ธ

Controversial opinion: Just stop making New Year's resolutions.
They don't seem to work. At least not how we usually do them.
More of my controversial opinion, including why and how you should set a New Year's intention is on the blog -----> https://bit.ly/3C18JL1
You may have given up on New Yearโs resolutions, so letโs try a new yearโs intention.
Nicole will explain why she thinks that a new yearโs intention is more effective than a resolution at making the change you want to see in the coming year. She will lead you through a mini coaching session reflecting on the past year and and narrowing down your intention to a word or short phrase. Finally, learn how to let the intention be your guide for the coming year.

For those who really like the Jesus story, today is the day God showed up in the world in the form of a tiny, frail human baby born to poor, young, displaced parents who had to flee to protect their son from harm.
Echoes of this story are all over the world today.
My wish is not just for the absence of war, but a kind of peace born out of the affirmation and love that God showed our complicated, resilient and frail human bodies that day.
Love, light and peace to all.

My Story
Iโve experienced the power of mindful leadership to help individuals, teams and organizations better live their purpose and mission in their community and world. I have helped teams developed new things ranging from a new kind of high school summer camp to resources for youth workers to new board and committee structures. I have used meditation and community-building practices to transform conflictual board meetings into opportunities for making long-avoided, difficult decisions that build up, rather than tear down relationships and organizations.
I see myself as a healer -- someone who can work on the deepest levels to bring people to wholeness while helping them develop administrative practices, build leadership capacity, and create strategic visions and plans that help them do their best work for the common good.
This is my biggest risk and creative venture yet. Join me.
