OSU Extension Service in Lane County offers food preservation classes for farmers
Eugene, Oregon – Oregon State University Extension Service will host a series of food preservation classes this summer, for farmers interested in selling producer-processed products under Oregon's Farm Direct Marketing Law. The series will span four sessions from June through October, 2024. "The Dehydrated Harvest" will cover all aspects of drying fruits and vegetables and will be held June 5 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Cottage Grove. "Tomato Creations: Sauces and Salsas" will teach participants to safely can tomato-based recipes on July 10, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Junction City. "Fiery Fermentation: Hot Sauce Crafting" will cover the art of fermentation on August 14 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Eugene. TANSY RAGWORT And CINNABAR MOTH UPDATE
Hello,
We have had a lot of community members reach out through the office and facebook about this year's Tansy Ragwort boom. I reached out to the Campus and asked about the boom and the lack of the Moth and Caterpillars many of you are reporting. Here is the information the Campus provided about the Tansy and the Cinnabar Moth, I edited it for content. I hope this information helps,
(We are) not certain what is going on with cinnabar moths this year. Perhaps something about environmental conditions this year have set them back. There was that unusual early heat-wave with high temps over 100 degrees F for several days in a row in early July.
Cinnabar moths have 1 generation per year. They overwinter as pupae and emerge as adults in late spring and early summer. Eggs laid by these adults develop into caterpillars that feed for about a month. Then, the mature caterpillars drop to the ground to pupate and where they remain until the next spring arrives.
Here is a link to a PNW Moths webpage that shows the typical flight period of the adult moths....
http://pnwmoths.biol.wwu.edu/browse/family-erebidae/subfamily-arctiinae/tribe-arctiini/tyria/tyria-jacobaeae/
In a typical year, the adults can be found from May until early August, but most adults are out late May through June. Most caterpillars should be out about now and for the next month or so. So if caterpillars are not present on plants now or soon, that could be confirmation that cinnabar moths are having an off year, especially if clients from several areas are noticing a lack of caterpillars on tansy ragwort plants. It's hard to know if low numbers could follow again next year or if numbers might bounce back.

How We Are Saving a River | Restoring Ross Island The Willamette River connects Portland, both literally and figuratively, and Ross Island is at the heart. It holds the key to our past and future relationship with the river. But, years of industrial activity and a changing climate have created a situation where harmful cyanobacteria can build up in...
