Thank you to everyone who attended our open house at Oak Creek Center for Urban Horticulture!
Over 85 community members visited to learn about the research and activities being done at OCCUH. They learned about the Oregon Native Bee Atlas, developed by the Pollinator Health Lab; the Honey Bee Lab’s research into bee health and nutrition; the Dry Farming Project’s research into growing crops with no water in the Willamette Valley; the Benton County Master Gardeners’ events and activities in Benton County; and the Organic Growers Club’s CSA and engagement with OSU students. Representatives were also present to talk about the Reciprocity Garden and the social justice work and student engagement it facilitates. There is such great work that goes on at OCCUH; thank you to everyone who took the time to table and explain what they do.
We had a great time learning about all the activities and research being done at OCCUH and we hope to see everyone again next year!

Our participated in the National Collegiate Landscaping Competition this year and had a blast.
Next year it's in Utah-- students from any major and campus can participate (hint hint) but it's geared towards those interested in a landscape/arboriculture career path.

Hazelnut industry's partnership with OSU Foundation produces long-term benefits
Oregon State University (OSU) is a major source of the world’s research on hazelnut breeding, agronomy, and food science. For many years the Oregon Hazelnut Industry has partnered with OSU by providing direct annual financial support from the Oregon Hazelnut Commission and the Hazelnut Marketing Board, and through contributions from many individuals and companies.

Bernadine Strik talking about the key findings from her 34 year career to the Oregon Blueberry Commission. What an amazing and productive program!
Our program leader, Shawn Mehlenbacher, was inducted as a Fellow of the American Society for Horticultural Science today at the ASHS annual meeting, held this year in Denver, Colorado. This is the highest recognition that ASHS bestows on members, acknowledging a career of significant contribution to horticultural science. We are very proud of our Shawn. Grab a cup of coffee in the morning, look for the bees visiting your squash, enter your data on your phone and maybe you'll be the first one in your County to document the magnificent squash bee. So easy! https://extension.oregonstate.edu/bee-atlas/squash-bee-survey
Lots of activity at the mason bee houses outside of the ALS greenhouses today. The pollinator garden where the bees are living are tenderly cared for by Al Shay and students in the department. Well done!
Botany and Plant Pathology Spring Seminar Series
Our first speaker this week is Dr. Kelly Vining. Dr. Vining's research integrates the powerful tools of genomics and bioinformatics with plant breeding. Dr. Vining works with a variety of crops important to the Pacific Northwest region of the United States, including mint, h**p, hazelnut, black raspberry, and potato. Common research themes are identification of disease and pest resistance genes, gene expression studies, and molecular marker development for marker-assisted selection. Her seminar will focus on h**p and mint. Both industrial h**p (Cannabis sativa L.) and mints (Mentha spp.) produce essential oils that are important commodities in the Pacific Northwest. Until recently, few genome resources existed for either crop, but this is rapidly changing. At OSU, the Vining lab and collaborators published the first-ever genome for a mint species in 2017, and have been building and using additional ‘omics resources since. For h**p, in partnership with local h**p seed producer OregonCBD, they already have a collection of nearly 50 h**p genomes, with more in the sequencing pipeline. For both crops, the genome resources are being put to work to discover molecular markers and accelerate breeding programs, as well as to ask fundamental questions about regulation of essential oil production and other agronomically-important traits. This seminar will provide an update on several mint and h**p projects enabled by the wealth of genome data.

About the OSU Department of Horticulture
Oregon’s horticultural industries include a prolific array of crops, plants, climates, gardens, and people interested in a tremendous diversity of enterprises, applications, and activities. Plants and plant communities in urban landscapes, watersheds, parks, golf courses, turf, gardens and arboreta, native plants, streamside gardens, restoration sites, bioswales, and green technologies are used to soften hardscapes and energy requirements, provide ecosystem services, and contribute to human health and the beauty of Oregon. Fruits, vegetables, berries, viticulture, and nuts are produced in desert, Mediterranean, and coastal climates while nursery and landscape plants are grown for many markets.
Horticulture faculty contribute to research, teaching, and Extension programs in collaboration with people who share an interest or passion for managing plants for human use and enjoyment. Research faculty explore the frontiers of genetics, genomics, molecular biology, physiology, ecology, soils, crop and nutrient management, water quality and conservation, tillage and cropping systems, integrated pest management, and sustainable and organic farming systems. Teaching faculty train students in integrated horticulture production (IHP), turf, and landscape management while other faculty teach graduate courses. Extension faculty deliver educational topics in a variety of formats and research applications within subject matter or commodity areas. We envision these programs contributing to either Environmental Landscapes or Sustainable Food and Farming Systems, important research areas within the Department of Horticulture.
Our faculty include 58 individuals in professional and instructor rank positions who work in 23 counties, four branch stations, and the Corvallis campus. Appointments often are split between research and teaching, multi-county Extension programs, disciplines covering multiple commodities, and administration in counties or experiment stations. Also, nine courtesy faculty contribute to horticultural research with USDA appointments and 36 emeritus faculty are involved in statewide activities.
