In a piece about the community initiative Project Phoenix, ecophysiologist Jamie Cornelius delves into the urgent need to understand how wildfire smoke impacts bird behavior and health. This joint project between UCLA and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County leverages observations from citizen scientists to help researchers understand what decisions birds are forced to make under smoky conditions.

Jamie, who has previously partnered with Project Phoenix, is currently working on her own smoke related research thanks to a National Geographic Society Explorer grant.

As wildfires grow more frequent and severe, this research is critical for protecting our feathered friends.

Cities are like organisms — they need immune systems.

Viruses can reproduce rapidly, taking over cells and turning them into viral factories within hours. Individuals' immune systems need to rise to the challenge, but what happens when they can't, and a whole population gets sick?

Check out the latest edition of the Oregon Stater to read how a College of Science led team is working on designing city-scale feedback loops to act as a kind of immune system for populations as a whole.

COS researchers suggest low climate change resilience in rocky Pacific Northwest shores | College of Science | Oregon State University 06/11/2024

Communities of species living on rocky Pacific Northwest shores may have low resilience to climate change.

College of Science doctoral graduate Zechariah Meunier, is the lead author on a study using a 15-year period ending in 2020 that included a multi-year marine heat wave.

Sessile invertebrates — those that stay in one place, such as mussels and barnacles — became more abundant during the study period, while seaweed species like kelps declined. When temperatures cooled, the communities did not return to their baseline conditions.
