Professor Steve Dundas was a featured speaker at last week's huge launch event for “Believe It: The Campaign for Oregon State University” – OSU’s second university-wide fundraising and engagement campaign.
Professor Dundas was on program under the header “Reasons to Believe” at the beginning of the night and gave a 3 minute talk on environmental economics.
The campaign seeks to raise $1.75 billion to support OSU priority initiatives – including student access and success, faculty positions, academic programs, research, statewide community engagement programs, OSU Athletics and facilities on our Corvallis campus and at OSU-Cascades in Bend.
Congratulations to Steve and OSU on the start of this important initiative!
Professor John Antle is featured in this article:
“My research is really at this point focused on the economic potential for this new crop,” Antle told KOIN 6 News. “When h**p was legalized in 2018, there was a lot of excitement about it and people predicted that it might become one of the most valuable crops in Oregon, for example.”

One of the many ways students become involved in the Applied Economics department is by joining the AEC Academic Quiz Bowl team. The team meets weekly during the winter and spring terms in order to prepare for an annual national tournament held each summer at the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association’s meetings.
In 2022, the team traveled to Anaheim, CA to compete in the Academic Bowl. Team members included, from left to right, Halle Fisher, Andrew Boggs, Jonathan Roth, Keegan Gibbs and James Sterns (faculty advisor). Not pictured – Drew Jacobson and Kourtney Lehman, who were not able to travel to Anaheim.
There were 15 teams competing in the tournament from 10 universities. The OSU team had a record of 2 and 2, placing fifth in the tournament.
Congratulations to our Quiz Bowl Team!!

Professor Dave Lewis was just named as the second holder of the Emery Castle Chair in Resource and Rural Economics! Congratulations to Dave!!
This Chair was founded by Emeritus Professor Emery N. Castle (1923-2017) to address issues in Oregon and nationally around resource and rural economics issues.
Professor Dave Lewis, who received his PhD from Oregon State University in 2005, specializes in environmental and natural resource economics. His research addresses economic issues related to land use, ecosystem service provision, and conservation science, and he uses microeconomic theory and micro-econometric tools to study how landowners make decisions, how land-use decisions affect ecosystem services, how the public values ecosystem services, and how conservation policy can be designed to provide ecosystem services.
Emery Castle passed away on October 2017 in Portland, Oregon, and this Chair continues in his honor. During his six decades as an active and internationally respected scholar, Emery Castle made outstanding contributions to agricultural and resource economics. Emery possessed a rare combination of scholarship and leadership. He served as OSU’s Dean of Faculty, Dean of the Graduate School, and Chair of the Department of Agricultural Economics (now Applied Economics).
From 1954 until he retired in 1993, five Oregon governors appointed Emery to Boards and Commissions that were focused on water resources and environmental quality. Emery chaired the National Rural Studies Committee from 1987 to 1997 and served as the inaugural Director of the OSU Rural Studies Program from 2001 to 2004. He was a fellow of the American Agricultural Economics Association, the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
