The memorial is meant to “serve as an abstract or personified concept representing a memorializing of the tragedies of the past, the present thriving community and the hopeful aspirations for the future,” city officials said in an announcement of the dedication, noting the city’s large Armenian American community.
The design for the memorial is still being worked on, said Madenlian. “The idea is for it to be a place that’s peaceful and quiet.”
The community plans to hold its annual gathering there once it’s completed, he said.
The City Council approved including the memorial last year within the Great Park as it expands.

AGBU Orange County Saturday School convened a special event on Saturday the 9th of March, uniting students, parents, teachers, and administration.
The occasion was opened by Mr. Hayk Arsenyan via Zoom, AGBU ARTS Director, who warmly welcomed participants to an exclusive screening of six short films. These films, produced by young Armenian talents and supported by AGBU, were showcased as part of the Armenians in Film campaign, currently touring AGBU centers across California. Fresno had the honor of hosting the inaugural screening on March 1st, while Pasadena eagerly anticipates its turn on May 8th.
The featured films, namely "Sunset," "Crossing the Blue," "Dehatsi," "Stones," "The Road," and "The Mud," captivated attendees with their artistic depth and cultural resonance. Each narrative offered a unique lens into the Armenian experience, showcasing the creativity and vision of emerging actors, producers, and directors.
Following the screening, a thought-provoking Q&A session was expertly moderated by Mr. Gevork Martirossian, Head of School. This interactive dialogue provided an invaluable opportunity for students to delve deeper into the themes explored in the films, articulate their interpretations, and articulate which piece resonated with them most profoundly and why. Such engagements serve as a commendable initiative in fostering a stronger connection between our youth and their cultural heritage, enriching their educational journey through cinematic storytelling.
The AGBU Orange County Saturday School extends its sincere gratitude to all participants, contributors, and supporters who made this event a resounding success. Through initiatives like these, AGBU reaffirms its commitment to empowering the next generation of Armenian talent and fostering cultural appreciation within our community.
