Congratulations to our Athlete of the Month - Sangeeta!

Coach’s Thoughts -
Sangheeta has been a consistent member since day one and is a regular at the best class (noon class).

Always looking to improve, Sangheeta is open and willing to any feedback we give her. She is also aware of her abilities and knows when it makes sense to scale or alter any movements.

A couple of things I can always count on when Sangheeta is in class.

1. She will be chatting it up with everyone while we are warming up.
2. She will ask what the masters weights are for the workout.
3. She will likely have a PR on an Olympic lift.
4. She will work hard and give every workout her best!

Congrats on being AOTM, your consistency and hardwork is an inspiration.

How long have you been doing CrossFit?
I started in 2013 when I moved to Andersonville in Chicago and I had to find a new gym.

Favorite Movement?
Doubleunders and lunges

What advice would you give to someone who is hesitant to start CrossFit?
There’s always a scale for your abilities. Don’t be a baby and just try it.

Favorite thing about CCF?
Noon class with my besties!

What do you do when you’re not at CCF (job, hobbies, other fitness, etc)?
I am exploring the world, engaging in local and national politics, playing pickleball, practicing animal advocacy, staying on top of changing data privacy laws and regulations in the U.S. and internationally, and Pilates.

What is your next big fitness goal?
Running in the Blue Ridge 208-mile relay race in September with my pals and beating Jeff Winkler in pickleball.

Athlete of the Month - Congrats, Kaitlyn Spinella!

Coach’s Thoughts: Kaitlyn is a coach’s dream member. We have loved watching her consistent development and improvement across all CrossFit modalities. She is always open to feedback and looking for advice and ways to improve. She shows up to each class eager to push herself and learn a new skill or try something brand new that she’s never done before. She radiates positivity and it’s infectious and welcomed at our gym. She competed in her first CrossFit Open this year and we are all excited to see her keep progressing and checking new goals off of her fitness list. Congrats, Kaitlyn, on being AOTM! Well deserved!

How long have you been doing CrossFit?
I started CrossFit in July 2023 when I moved to Detroit for work and joined Core City Fitness. Before I moved, I was talking to a friend of mine about how nervous I was about moving to a new city without knowing anyone, and she recommended CrossFit as a way to find a gym and community, as she had done CrossFit previously and loved it (thanks Katherine!).

Favorite Movement?
This may be an unpopular opinion, but I like wall walks! Of course they are hard, but it was one of the first gymnastics skills I was able to do.

What advice would you give to someone who is hesitant to start CrossFit?
Go for it! The workouts are able to be scaled to any fitness level, and it’s fun to finish workouts and learn new skills that you never thought you could do. It’s never boring because every day the workout is a little bit different, so it really keeps you engaged.

Favorite thing about CCF?
I immediately felt welcomed and the environment was not intimidating at all. The coaches are all so helpful and patient at making sure everyone is doing a version of the workout that is accessible to them, but also pushes them outside of their comfort zone a little bit to get better. People’s experience with CrossFit is pretty varied at CCF, but everyone is very supportive and cheers on everyone else regardless of fitness level.

Congrats to our athlete of the month - Nick Polzin!
Coach’s thoughts - Nick is a true powerhouse in Olympic weightlifting and is helpful to members in giving tips as a USAW and CFL1 coach. By day, he works as a dedicated advisor for Hamtramck schools and he juggles a demanding teaching and work schedule. Nick consistently shows up by finding time in the morning or evening to get to the gym with unwavering dedication and passion. He seeks advice on getting better at his weaknesses and works hard to attack them. His commitment to improvement serves as an inspiration to us all. Congrats, Nick!

How long have you been doing CrossFit?
I got started because I needed something to keep in shape for the summer of college swimming, and it’s been off and on since then.

Favorite Movement?
Everything except gymnastics

What advice would you give to someone who is hesitant to start CrossFit?
I would tell them to come on a Saturday morning, the workouts are a lot more laid back and they can meet more of the gym.

Favorite thing about CCF?
My favorite thing about CCF is how driven everyone is, but also everyone is about having a good time too.

What do you do when you’re not at CCF (job, hobbies, other fitness, etc)?
I do a lot, I work for Americorps and Motor City Brewing, and then I also workout at Optimus. For hobbies I love to find some techno or house in the city.

What is your next big fitness goal?
Well this max out week was a little eye opening, so my goal is to get huge.
