While we are saddened to hear the news of the diagnosis for Bruce, we are using this as an educational moment.

Aphasia is a condition that affects your ability to communicate. It can affect your speech, as well as the way you write and understand both spoken and written language.

Aphasia typically occurs suddenly after a stroke or a head injury. But it can also come on gradually from a slow-growing brain tumor or a disease that causes progressive, permanent damage (degenerative). The severity of aphasia depends on a number of conditions, including the cause and the extent of the brain damage.

Once the cause has been addressed, the main treatment for aphasia is speech and language therapy. The person with aphasia relearns and practices language skills and learns to use other ways to communicate. Family members often participate in the process, helping the person communicate.

We, at TOTR, work with patients with Aphasia and know that proper treatment is the key to improvement with this diagnosis.

You’ve probably seen this post at some point in the past few days. If you haven’t heard, the CDC changed their milestones for speech and language and, as SLPs and parents, we are disappointed. We worry that these new milestones will increase the length of time it may take for a child to be identified with a language delay and to access the appropriate services that will help push the child to be ready to enter school.

instrumentation to our outpatient clinic via the use of our Fiberoptic Endoscopic of Swallow (FEES) system. Our FEES
Endoscopist is trained in the assessment and treatment of swallowing disorders through the implementation of FEES.

Who can FEES be performed on?
Patients with the following:
● Difficulty swallowing due to age
● Head and neck cancer
● Head injury
● Stroke
● Neurologic conditions

FEES is specifically helpful for patients
with the following issues:
● Isolation precautions
● Obesity
● Medical complexity
● Feeding tubes
● Dementia
