Dr. Manderline Scales was an Educator, Mentor, a Change Agent, Friend to All that she came in contact with. She was the strong encouraging voice that chased away doubt and raised hope. She moved us when she spoke to press forward, lift upward and always look back to grab the hand behind you. We will never forget her generousity and indelible spirit.

FAS Remembers Aretha Franklin This Way....
Her songs are more than reminders of love, calls to action, or prayers to soothe pain. When she sang them she embodied and soulfully translated its meaning to us. From a "Natural Woman" to the command for "Respect," "I say a little prayer for you" are all her anthems to us to stay vigilant and mindful, as to who's hand we ultimately are in. She informed, transformed & affirmed to know who we are... "(To be) Young, Gifted and Black or A Rose🌹is still a Rose." (click on photo)
Love and prayers to us all...
Aretha Franklin stepped in to perform ‘Nessun Dorma’ at last minute when Pavarotti got ill Her fellow singers, including Celine Dion, couldn't believe what they were watching

The National Council of Negro Women, Inc. (NCNW) is a voluntary non-profit membership organization helping women to improve the quality of life for themselves, their families and the community. Through its national affiliate organization and 250 community-based sections, NCNW has an outreach to four million women who all contribute to the peaceful solutions of problems of human welfare and rights. The men of NCNW are known as the Franklin Male Assembly. Dr. Manderline Scales convener at Male Assembly. Mary McLeod Bethune founded NCNW in 1935. Her parents were slaves and she was a distinguished educator and government consultant. Mrs. Bethune saw the need for harnessing the power and extending the leadership of Black women through a national organization. NCNW is an “organization of organizations,” and serves as a clearinghouse for the activities of women. Mrs. Bethune described “the need for a united organization of women to open doors for young women, united so that when it speaks, it power will be felt.” There are 37 affiliates’ organizations including sororities, religious and other professional associations. Our Mission is to advance opportunities and the quality of life for African American women, their families and communities.

As we strive to prompt and implement opportunities that reflect the mission of NCNW, we have sponsored Educational, Economic, Social, Cultural, and Self-help projects. Over the years, we have supported our Youth and Collegiate Sections. Our youth have participated in workshops on equity, college preparation, obesity, leadership and more. Most recently, our community projects included voter registration drives, entrepreneurship, estate planning and HIV/AIDs workshops. FAS is a member of the North Carolina State Coalition.
