🌟 Fort Pulaski Restoration Complete! 🌟
We’re thrilled to share that we’ve successfully fortified the historic fort’s iconic brickwork and ventilation. Working side-by-side with park staff, an HPTC Maintenance Action Team carefully restored the unique casemate ventilation to ensure the structure’s integrity. Together, we repaired damaged masonry, replaced missing bricks, and applied hot wax to protect the Fort’s bronze plaques. Our work helps preserve this national treasure so that future generations can appreciate and learn about our history.
“The HPTC team brought a wealth of expertise and passion to this project,” said Melissa Memory, superintendent of Fort Pulaski National Monument. “Their collaboration with our dedicated staff ensured that this historic fort’s defenses remain strong for years to come.”
Rodanté Paz, an HPTC exhibit specialist, added, “The Fort Pulaski staff made us feel like part of the crew.”
This $300,000 project was made possible through the Great American Outdoors Act. We’re proud to help preserve our nation’s history while creating enjoyable experiences for visitors. Here’s to many more successful projects ahead! 🧱✨

HPTC is happy to have the opportunity to bring our unparalleled hands-on expertise to important projects like this where we blend tradition with modern techniques to care for our national treasures. Let's get to work!
Exterior preservation work has begun on Pedrick Store House on Derby Wharf. National Park Service employees and Student Conservation Association interns will be doing exterior maintenance and preservation work for approximately six weeks.
Work, funded by the Great American Outdoors Act, will take place one side of the building at a time, starting with the east side. The work team will be repairing and replacing clapboards and trim, cleaning and oiling the building, and securing loose historic nails. This work should not impact access to Derby Wharf.
The Pedrick Store House was built in Marblehead, MA, just across the harbor from Salem, in 1770 by Thomas Pedrick, a successful member of the merchant community in pre-Revolutionary War Marblehead. In 1993, the building was purchased by the town of Marblehead. After plans for restoration of the building in place were unsuccessful, the National Park Service accepted the building in 2003, and began several years of conservation on the original 18th century timbers.

Last week on this old barracks…
Our preservationists and interns from Historic Preservation Training Center's Traditional Trades Advancement Program completed a dutchman repair to address damage to one of the barracks columns. This process includes cutting away the rotted portions and replacing them with new matching material. Such repairs help to extend the life of the original piece and avoid more costly replacement of the entire component.
