Over the past several years, multiple research projects in the Jurutka Molecular Endocrinology Laboratory have been conducted to impact and improve human health in the Phoenix area, the West Valley community, and beyond.

Some of these specific projects include:
1) collaborating with research partners at the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix to elucidate genetic "fingerprints" for diagnosis/treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and the role of vitamin D and the gut microbiome in IBS pathophysiology,
2) studying the mechanistic effects of "nutraceuticals" such as vitamin D, resveratrol, and curcumin on anti-aging and chemoprevention,
3) performing rexinoid drug design/discovery to develop pharmaceuticals for treatment of cancer, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson's disease in elderly populations,
4) investigating the neurobiology of vitamin D action in autism and depression,
5) working with clinicians at Phoenix Children’s Hospital to design novel approaches in assessing the gut microbiome and other biomarkers in pediatric inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and celiac disease populations.

In the realm of STEM education, the journey to success often involves navigating through a myriad of challenges, including academic transitions and career aspirations. For transfer students, the path can be particularly daunting as they navigate new environments and opportunities. However, for those who find themselves part of initiatives like the TraIN project, the transition becomes not just manageable, but a springboard to excellence and achievement.

Meet Andrea, Devin, and Amina--three graduate students who embarked on their STEM journeys as transfer students and found their footing through the TraIN project. The first photo of a jaguar in Costa Rica that our associate professor, Dr. Jan Schipper ever took. This male was found in the Talamanca Mountains, well outside the park, which inspired the team to find ways for other jaguars to move between parks.

Schipper is also is working to create a corridor that connects La Amistad International Park (on the Continental Divide of the Americas) with Corcovado National Park (on the Pacific coast) to create a protective pathway that will enlarge the jaguars’ habitat.
