This week, we’re diving into Arnold Schwarzenegger’s “Be Useful: Seven Tools for Life,” where he shares powerful life lessons that fueled his journey to greatness. From a small gym in Austria to the global stage, Arnold’s story is packed with practical wisdom for anyone aiming to make a real impact. Here are some of his key principles:

1️⃣ Start Small, Think Big – Arnold set massive goals from day one, even when training in a gym without heating. Each small step helped him conquer bodybuilding, movies, and politics.

🌟 Alpha Mindset Monday: Train with Intention 🌟

Athletes, it’s time to elevate your game by training with purpose. 🧠💪 Every rep, sprint, and drill—ask yourself, “Why am I doing this?” The best athletes don’t just show up; they focus, analyze, and adjust to improve with every session. Here’s what training with intention looks like:

1️⃣ Lifting Weights

Training with Intention: Concentrate on each rep’s quality, keeping form tight and activating the target muscles with every movement. Slow down to feel the full range, focusing on breathing and body alignment. Adjust your tempo and weight based on how you feel each rep, aiming for muscle growth and strength, not just completion.

2️⃣ Speed & Agility Drills

Training with Intention: Focus on the position of each foot, accelerating and decelerating with control, and keeping your center of gravity balanced. Watch your mechanics and ensure every step counts toward improving explosiveness. Take time between reps to evaluate what went well and where you can improve, so every set is better than the last.

3️⃣ Practice Plays or Skills Work

Practicing with Intention: Visualize game situations for each play, focus on positioning, and make adjustments based on potential defensive setups. Practice as if every play is happening live—think about timing, communication, and your role in ex*****on. Check your performance after each rep, finding opportunities to improve timing or positioning, to turn each rep into game-ready action.

4️⃣ Conditioning

Training with Intention: Approach every sprint or circuit with the goal to push yourself. Stay engaged with your breathing and form, keep your intensity high, and think about every movement’s purpose. If it’s a sprint, give full effort; if it’s endurance, focus on pacing and resilience. This way, conditioning isn’t just a task—it becomes a step toward peak performance.

💥This Week’s Challenge: Practice with Intention

Every rep, every play, every drill—don’t just go through the motions, dominate them. Training with intention is how you get to the next level.

1️⃣ What was your emphasis in training during last offseason?

“My situation was a little bit different this past offseason coming off of hip surgery last year. My biggest emphasis this past offseason was getting my hip strength and mobility back to normal as well as working on stability and flexibility. Even though I didn’t have a normal offseason I still had to get back into physical shape after missing last season. I pushed myself to get back in cardio shape while also focusing on building my lower body strength back up.”

2️⃣ Do you have a regular sleep routine, and how many hours of sleep do you get per night?

“For the most part I do have a regular sleep routine. I typically try to get a minimum of 8 or 9 hours a night.”

3️⃣ What does post-training session nutrition look like for you?

“Usually for post training sessions I tend to eat something with protein while also including some type of fruit. Some days this includes chicken, could be a protein shake, or oatmeal. I also make sure to get in some electrolytes with some type of drink whether thats a gatorade or a liquid IV.”

4️⃣ Having a great day-to-day Mindset is key to the development of a competitive athletes focus. What types of things do you do to build your daily Mindset?

“Every morning and night I have an athletes journal that I fill out that prepares me for the day while also concluding my day and what that looks like. I also have been including more goal setting on a daily basis.”

5️⃣ At Alpha we believe every athlete has their own unique ‘Why’ when it comes to their sport. ‘Why’ do you play volleyball?

“I play volleyball because the sport gives me an outlet both physically and mentally. I also play the sport because of my competitiveness and how fast pace and intense the game is. I love that this sport is beginning to get the recognition and appreciation that it deserves.”
