Your toddler learns so much just by spending time with you. It's great to continue having conversations throughout the day leaving plenty of room for them to talk while you listen. Continue to describe and label the places, things, actions and emotions that surround them using full sentences. You can do this anytime - diaper changes, laundry day, and trips to the grocery store. These are all great opportunities to introduce your baby to new words and experiences. Adding gestures to common terms like, "all done" and "more", can help your baby communicate with you.⁣

If you have a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), reading can help in situations where the child does not like certain textures and activities or has trouble getting along with other kids. Over time, reading aloud can also strengthen speech and language skills. If you find reading with your child challenging, consider trying these tips during your next reading session together:⁣

1. Read together when your child is relaxed and paying attention, such as before bedtime.⁣

2. Read books that have photos and drawings of faces. These can help your child recognize feelings.⁣

3. Read the same story many times. Children enjoy the repetition and it helps them learn language.⁣

4. Point to pictures and talk about them. “Look at the silly monkey!: You can also ask your child to point at certain things. “Where is the cat?”⁣

5. Find books that repeat words many times. Books with thymes are also good.⁣

6. Softly clap your hands and help your child clap along to the rhythm of the words.⁣

7. Try books with buttons that make a sound when pushed. Many children with ASD enjoy these.⁣

Even a small amount of time set aside reliably every day can become something children and parents learn to look forward to. This is a time for positive connection, without rules or commands, to help everyone in the family defuse stress and appreciate each other’s company. This should be considered special time and should not be contingent on a child’s good behavior.⁣

HERE ARE SOME TIPS FOR SUCCESS: ⁣

❤️Aim for 5 minutes per day with younger kids, 15 minutes with teens⁣

❤️Let your child choose an activity they enjoy and you join in⁣

❤️Actively listen and let them lead the conversation⁣

❤️Validate their choices and interests⁣

❤️Focus on giving positive attention to good behavior⁣

❤️Ignore minor misbehavior⁣

❤️Avoid directing the activity or criticizing⁣

Your child’s growing independence from the family and interest in friends might be obvious by now. Healthy friendships are very important to your child’s development, but peer pressure can become strong during this time. Children who feel good about themselves are more able to resist negative peer pressure and make better choices. Here is a positive parenting quick tip to help you support your 9 to 11-year-old during this time:⁣

MAKE CLEAR RULES AND STICK TO THEM. TALK WITH YOUR CHILD ABOUT WHAT YOU EXPECT FROM THEIR BEHAVIOR WHEN NO ADULTS ARE PRESENT. IF YOU PROVIDE REASONS FOR THE RULES, IT WILL HELP THEM TO KNOW WHAT TO DO IN MOST SITUATIONS. ⁣

Anorexia nervosa, the most common eating disorder, is self-imposed starvation, usually by a young woman who is otherwise high-functioning. Personality types more likely to develop the disorder include athletes, perfectionists, and over-achievers. They are driven to maintain a dangerously low body weight because of a distorted self-image. Detecting anorexia can be very difficult because it typically affects high-performing kids. ⁣

Review this quick guide about Anorexia Nervosa. If you think your child may be anorexic, contact your child’s pediatrician when you first start noticing signs.⁣
