LTC Sarah Whitten served as our Professor of Military Science for the past 3 years, and is moving on to her next duty assignment where she will continue to have a consequential impact on Soldiers, and the US Army. Her leadership has had such a significant impact on the programs culture, climate, and performance of all cadets, and staff here at Furman. Her high standards of conduct , ensured the programs vision and values were a direct reflection of the US Army, and She has truly had a positive impact on our program, students, cadets, and staff. She will be missed!

The Paladin Battalion sends our thoughts and prayers to the friends and family of Paladin Football Player, Bryce Stanfield, as we mourn his passing. It is prevalent Bryce made a substantial impact on the Furman community as well as Cadets of the Paladin Battalion💜🤍

“Bryce was an outstanding young man and an equally fine student, football player, and friend. He was so much a part of who we are as a program and school, and was pivotal in our success on the football field and through giving of his time in outreach to our community. In every sense he was the best representative we could have.” -Furman Head Football Coach Clay Hendrix

Cadet Zagar was featured as the USACC Cadet of the Week! Way to go Cadet Zagar!
4th Brigade Army ROTC
U.S. Army Cadet Command (ROTC)
Furman University

It's Thursday and that means it's time to meet our newest 🎉

Meet Matthew Zagar, a chemistry major at Furman University in South Carolina.

Zagar joined because of a strong call to serve and his ability to thrive under pressure.

"Army ROTC presents many unique challenges that in order to overcome, I must continually grow as a person and as a leader. In my experience, the effort I invest into the trials of ROTC is proportional to the fruits it bears, and many of those trials are distinct to ROTC."

He is motivated, each day, to be a better leader by the successes of his peers.

"From a leader’s perspective I don’t always have to have the answer, but it allows me to rely on the strengths of those on my team, and work together to create solutions or solve a problem. Self-reflection has helped in monitoring my progress, I try to avoid comparing myself to others, but by looking at what I know I can do better helps motivate me to continuously develop."

An active member of the Paladin Battalion, Zagar graduated from Airborne School 🪂 last summer and is a member of the Ranger Challenge team representing 4th Brigade Army ROTC at the 2024 Sandhurst Military Skills Competition.

Outside of ROTC, Zagar completed a medical study abroad program in Portugal. He is a member of the Furman Cheer Team and multiple campus clubs and organizations.

He considers it a privilege to serve in a profession like the Army and plans on attending medical school 👨‍⚕️ and eventually becoming a U.S. Army flight surgeon.

This past weekend, four Cadets from the Paladin Battalion attended a joint-ministry ROTC retreat at White Sulphur Springs, PA hosted by military ministries OCF, Valor, Navigators, and Oaks. Cadets Colburn, Alexander, Kamis, and Kuhlman learned about "The Difference of a Christian Officer," the theme for the weekend. USN Rear Admiral Carey Cash, guest speaker, hosted three sessions on "Calling and Character," "The Happy Warrior," and "Courage and Conviction."🙌🏼

Additionally, these four Cadets were given opportunities to attend a variety of panels including a junior officer panel, married in the military panel, and single in the military panel.

To top off the weekend, Cadets conquered the high ropes course and even had the opportunity to go horseback riding!🐴

What a great experience!😃
