âś… Struggling in coaching clients? While the struggle is real, the struggle is also necessary, and it is good for us. Thank God!
Chad writes "Sometimes coaching can be a frustrating, challenging, and tiresome job. I experienced many of the pains of coaching all in one week recently:
Two no-show clients.
A client who came ready to complain, but not ready to work.
Partners and vendors who seemed hell-bent on making my job harder, not easier.
Technology woes that included multiple issues with my meeting platform, Zoom.
A scheduling glitch that had me double-booked with two very important clients.
A marketing event that cost me $500 attracted twenty-seven of the wrong people.
If it sounds like I’m complaining, it’s because I just did. But the purpose of this post is not to air my frustrations. Instead, it’s to celebrate and appreciate the obstacles that trip us up, slow us down, sidetrack us, and stress us. Why celebrate? Because friction is needed. "

✅ How can we help clients navigate? When something becomes meaningful, it becomes useful—it becomes applicable. Meaning makes the situation much more navigable.
Brian writes "On our honeymoon, Danelle and I were traveling southeast through southern Indiana on our way to the Smoky Mountains when the road suddenly ended. Looking ahead, the blacktop petered out and an enormous pile of rock lay right in the middle of the road. At least, it would have, had there been a road. We had chosen this route based on a map of Indiana, which showed this to be the shortest and fastest route.
We stopped at a nearby gas station and inquired about the situation: “What happened to the road?” The answer was simple, it wasn’t finished yet. This was 1991, pre-GPS, pre-Google Maps. The map we purchased of southern Indiana had put this new road on their map even though it wasn’t quite finished. Maps did not automatically update in those days. "

âś…New Blog Post! The Goodness of Limitations
Chad writes...I think it was Clint Eastwood’s Dirty Harry character who quipped, “A man’s got to know his limitations.” As coaches, we tend to be anti-limitations. Many of our clients are held back by limiting beliefs, assumptions, and perspectives. We often encourage clients to think bigger and to stretch beyond the constraints that they allow to hold them back. But maybe some limits are good. In fact, maybe we coaches can serve our clients by helping them know their limitations.
I’ve learned to recognize the positive power some limits can have on my life and for my clients. Let me share three specific limitations that serve to help us make the most of life....

In this thought-provoking podcast episode, Brian Miller and Chad Hall, engage in a deep dive into the concept of a "non-anxious presence" inspired by Mark Sayers' book, "Non-Anxious Presence." They explore how the increasing anxiety in today's world, fueled by rapid technological and societal changes, leads people to seek security in strongholds—mental or emotional safe zones. Drawing parallels between ancient fortresses and modern anxieties, they discuss how these strongholds can become prisons, hindering growth and flourishing. Through insightful dialogue, they highlight the role of coaches as non-anxious presences, guiding clients to align with reality, challenge distorted perceptions, and navigate the balance between chaos and order in a volatile world. With humor and wisdom, they emphasize the importance of staying grounded, focusing on truth, and embracing the discomfort of growth.

❤️ Are Coaches “Super Communicators”? Comment below - would love to hear your thoughts!
Chad writes...New Yorker reporter Charles Duhigg is out to help you and me become better communicators. In fact, he has uncovered some wisdom that will help us be “super communicators” – people who know how to recognize what kind of conversation they are in and then are capable of using the right skills for making the most of their conversations.
I heard Duhigg on a number of podcasts recently, and each time I thought, “What he’s describing sounds very helpful for coaches.” Most of us coaches are properly trained in the skills of listening and asking curious questions (two skills Duhigg addresses well). What was new for me was how Duhigg framed the three kinds of conversations we can have. Being able to recognize the type of conversation we are having can help us make the most of the conversation by showing up in the appropriate way.

Brian writes...After I asked one of my clients what she would like to work on, she began to talk about being her authentic self in various environments. My client was expressing angst at some pushback she had received in an environment that encouraged her to be her authentic self but discouraged her from acting in a way that was true to her. Though I was not completely clear on the focus of the topic, I could tell it was an issue that pressed into the tender flesh of her heart.
We worked through the issue slowly, taking our time to uncover the core issue. Then we worked on designing some action that would help her show up authentically and honor the environment where she had experienced pushback.
At the end of the conversation, she gave me this compliment: “You made me comfortable enough to be uncomfortable.”

Chad writes....A phrase I keep hearing over and over lately was made prominent by author Brené Brown: clear is kind; unclear is unkind. The context for the phrase is leadership and the tendency to avoid tough conversation, “including giving honest, productive feedback.” Brown pinpoints that a culture of being “nice and polite” provides cover for a lack of courage. Instead of doing the hard and right thing, it’s tempting to do nothing and call it “being nice.”

Chad Hall writes:
We live in a world of options, choices, and remedies. If I want a pair of jeans, I can go online and find thousands of options that will fit me and my needs. If I want a hot sauce that isn’t too hot and is also gluten-free, I am highly confident that I will be able to find it. I could probably even find it in a blue bottle. If I want to learn Mandarin, there is an app for that, a class for that, and even a private tutor who will come to my house in Hickory, NC to help me.
In so many ways, the world is at our fingertips. And not just in consumer situations. I can also listen to the best preaching in the world via podcasts. I can talk with a healthcare professional over the internet to get a diagnosis and then have my prescription sent to me.
