Jana is Director of Graduate Admissions and Admissions Operations for Hawaii Pacific University
Tom is a Consultant/Author/Interpreter/Translator/Teacher who lives in Tokyo and be joining us by zoom

Our speaker on July 15 was Janine LeGrand who went to the missionary field from Calvary Episcopal Church, in Kaneohe. She serves as the Diocesan Health Coordinator with the Diocese of Masindi-Kitara, Church of Uganda (Anglican). Janine serves with the Society of Anglican Missionaries and Senders (SAMS) headquartered in Pennsylvania. The goal of her ministry is to help people know the love of Christ in a practical, touchable way through helping them be healthier.
Janine joined Rotary in 2019; and, for the 2022-23 Rotary Year, she was selected Rotarian of the Year by her home club, the Masindi Rotary Club in Uganda.

July 15 – Regular Meeting. Program: Janine LeGrand, member of the Rotary Club of Masindi-Kitara, Uganda. She is a health-education missionary to Uganda. Janine went to Africa from Kaneohe, Hawaii after having been commissioned in April 2008 at Calvary Episcopal Church. Speaker topic: Her experiences in Uganda, especially during COVID world-wide outbreak.
29 – Regular Meeting. Program: Dr. Jennifer D. Small Griswold, Associate Professor, Department Chair Atmospheric Sciences Department, University of Hawaii at Manoa; Speaker Topic: Climate Change and Weather.

The Magic of Rotary" is the theme for the Rotary year 2024-2025.
The program was provided by Rick Tabor, Counseling Psychologist, member of multiple non-profit boards, member of the Rotary Club of Honolulu, and Oahu Chairperson for the Rotary Youth Leadership Academy (RYLA). Speaker Topic: Coping Skills and Meditation.
We all agreed Rick is the busiest person we know - we are not sure how he copes :)

Tyne Cot Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery and Memorial to the Missing a Commonwealth War Graves Commission burial ground for the dead of the First World War in the Ypres Salient on the Western Front. It is the largest cemetery for Commonwealth forces in the world, for any war.

PROGRAM: Karen Knudsen, Senior Fellow at the East/West Center and Chair, Board of Directors for the Japan-American Society of Hawaii (JASH); and, Reyna Kaneko, President of JASH. Karen spoke about her and her husband’s involvement with the Peace Corps in the early 1970’s and the importance of overall diplomacy to reduce risk of conflict. Reyna spoke about the mission of JASH which is to “promote understanding and friendship between the people of the U.S. and Japan through the unique perspective of Hawaii since 1976.” JASH has many programs that involve the education and nurturing young leaders, business networking events, military programming, and annual fundraisers.

On Monday April 15 we had three Radford High School Students of the Quarter (SOQ) who were introduced by Bob Frija.
In attendance today were Alison Layne (Radford High School Interact Advisor) and
SOQ’s: Olena Umetsu, Jingwei Tong, and Taylor Laidlaw. Each student stood up in front of members and briefly presented their future goals, aspirations, answered questions.
Our speaker was Dan Dinell - Tree’s for Honolulu’s Future - a non-profit that connects people to resources to create a better future.
He spoke about the importance of trees for our canopy and overall biosphere. “Honolulu is Hot, Trees are Cool.” Dan’s goal is three-fold: Educate, Advocate, and Facilitate. Honolulu is losing valuable tree canopy and therefore heat is increasing.
Dan suggests several ways for mitigation: 1. Plant a Tree, 2. Ask City to plant it for you ([email protected]), and 3. If you are interested in Volunteering and Organizing go to https://www.treesforhonlulu.org/events/.

Rotary Club of Pearl Harbor President Elect Tina Doty attended Presidents Elect Training in Los Angeles to prepare for the 2024-2025 Rotary year
Today’s Program: Honouliuli National Historic Site. Much mahalo to the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii (JCCH) and President Nate Gyotoku for sending JCCH volunteer docent John Okutani who presented a history of Japanese immigrants (Gannenmomo) to Hawai’i, and events leading up to many Hawai’i Japanese-Americans being sent to interment/POW camps, to include the largest, Honouliuli, in the months after the Pearl Harbor attack. Detainees included Rotary Club of Pearl Harbor Past President Wanda Fukunaga’s grandfather. Wanda added her memories and its effect on her, her family, and the Japanese community.
Program: University of Hawaii Army ROTC program head honcho (Professor of Military Science, or “PMS”) Army Lieutenant Colonel Jerrod Melander and his Cadet Battalion Commander, McKinley Rainey
For the past three years, LTC Melander has been the Army PMS at UH, responsible for Recruiting, Training, Retaining, and Commissioning young scholar, athlete, leaders into the United States Army as second lieutenants. The UH Army ROTC Program (Warrior Battalion) has roots that date prior to 1916, and has a storied legacy.
Annually the Warrior Battalion produces approximately 30 - 35 second lieutenants that serve in a variety of capacities, to include Army active, reserve, and National Guard components and branches. Most commissioned through the Warrior Battalion go on to provide meaningful contributions to their communities, states, and the Nation.

Today’s Program: Robert “Bob” Merce. Hawaii’s Prison System
Bob is a retired lawyer who has been involved in criminal justice reform for more than a decade. In 2015 he travelled to Norway with Hawaii Supreme Court Associate Justice Michael Wilson, State Representative Gregg Takayama, and other government officials to study the Norwegian correctional system which is generally regarded as the best in the world. From 2016 to 2018, Bob served as vice-chair of the House Concurrent Resolution 85 Task Force on Prison Reform and chaired the Task Force’s subcommittee on jail design. He was also the principal author of the Task Force’s 116-page report to the 2018 Legislature. Bob was appointed to the Hawaii Reentry Commission by House Speaker Scott Saiki and served on the Commission-which oversees prison reentry policies and programs-until 2019 when the Commission’s responsibilities were transferred to the Hawaii Correctional Systems Oversight Commission. Bob served on the Board of Directors of the Native Hawaiian Legal Corp. for seven years and is currently on the Board of Directors of Partners in Care, a non-profit corporation committed to ending homelessness on Oahu. Since 2012 Bob has been assisting terminally ill and severely debilitated prisoners obtain compassionate release. He has written extensively on justice reform issues.
