Today, Licensed Professional Counselors Ariel Armstrong () and Ashley Hix are sharing their thoughts on Juneteenth. Be sure to check out our stories to hear more from other members.
“Juneteenth is a national holiday that commemorates the “end of slavery” as it was on June 19th, 1865, when the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation was ordered. Freed slaves would go on to continue to fight for voting rights, gender equality, and educational opportunities. This fight continues into today.
According to Dr. Joy DeGruy’s theory on Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome, continued discrimination has created intergenerational psychological trauma impacting the mental health of African Americans. Although strides have been made to create equality and reduce harm, approximately 11% of Licensed Professional Counselors report being black (according to The Association of Black Psychologists) and only 25% of African Americans seek mental health services, meaning there are not enough black therapists to provide direct services to the African American community.
Juneteenth not only marks the historic milestone of the end of slavery, but also serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for equality and justice. As we continue to grapple with the intergenerational trauma and systemic barriers faced by the African American community, the need for diverse and culturally competent therapists is more pressing than ever, ensuring that everyone has access to the support and resources they need to heal and thrive in a more equitable society.”
Thank you Ashley and Ariel for sharing!

“The name! When I was brainstorming options, I wanted to find something that would capture the spirit of the practice. My mind kept drifting back to the image of a warm, sleepy cat sunning herself by a window - and that’s how HappyCat Counseling, LLC was born!”
To all the moms and nurturers of the world, we love you! 💜 Happy Mother’s Day!
What a wonderfully relaxing and healing experience we had at our event with this morning.
A few takeaways from the session:
🌿 You’ll get from it what you need
🌿 You are allowed to relax
🌿 Give yourself permission to relax
🌿 Affirmation: “I’ve got you, I’m not going to let you down”
🌿 It’s very difficult to think of anything else while you’re humming, so give it a try if you’d like to quiet your mind
Thank you, Jessica, for having us at your beautiful studio!
