Tristan Bollenbaugh, senior at the Norman J. Radow College of Humanities and Social Sciences, spends time doing field research at Frey Lake as part of an Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities (URCA) grant award to study sedimentation accumulations rates and patterns. Student research opportunities such as these are exceptional resume-builders for students competing for jobs post graduation.
Photo 2: Under the watchful eye of Assistant Professor of Geography and Geospatial Sciences Ranbir Kang, Ph.D., who is the Principal Investigator (PI) for this research project, student Tristan Bollengaugh get in the weeds and up to his knees in water and silt to take measurements for their research study.
Photo 3: Tristan Bollenbaugh (l) works on the inflatable boat with fellow student Keely Gerety . The research team initially used the boat to collect samples. However, the sediment was deep enough in some places making it difficult to navigate without becoming stuck, and ultimately resorted to using a paddleboard which sat higher in the water.

The fall semester is officially underway! Dean Kaukinen and Associate Dean, Dr. Chen, helped welcome students in with a sweet treat at our Donuts with the Dean event. Thank you to all of the students who came to support, be on the lookout for our other events coming up!
Dean Catherine (Katie) Kaukinen received the highest honor a university can bestow on a faculty member. On Thursday, August 8th Dean Kaukinen was installed as the Dr. Norman J. Radow Endowed Dean’s Chair of the Humanities and Social Sciences. The $1 million endowment from the college’s benefactor Norman J. Radow and his wife, Lindy Radow, provides a level of support for the college and the dean to meet the highest priority needs of its students and faculty.
The ceremony featured video testimonials from colleagues from around the country who extolled Kaukinen’s mentorship, support, scholarly research, and leadership. Kennesaw State University President, Kathy S. Schwaig said to the dean, “We are so proud to have you as our dean. We are so glad to celebrate you today, and I know you will continue to proudly represent KSU and the Radow name with this new title.”
Kaukinen became dean of the college in 2022 and through her leadership creates a climate for success for more than 8,000 students majoring in more than 80 programs of study, and almost 30,000 students enrolled in at least one course delivered by Radow College faculty.
