Dear Geology/Earth Sciences Alumni and Friends:
It is with a heavy heart that I share with you that Dr. Rodney Feldmann passed away May 1. He was an eminent scholar, teacher, mentor and a wonderful and kind individual who will be missed. You can read his obituary here.
We honored Dr. Feldmann at our annual awards ceremony on Friday, May 3. Rod loved attending this annual event with its focus on and celebration of students. When I first met Rod 32 years ago, I remember well that he shared how much he loved working at Kent State, teaching, advising, and doing research every day. I'm so glad that Rod was honored for his extensive contributions at the 2023 Geological Society of America Annual Meeting in Pittsburgh last fall. Many of his former graduate students presented research and honored his mentorship at that daylong session. It was a special day.
I know Dr. Feldmann will be missed by all, but his enormous impact on KSU Geology will endure. If you would like to donate to the new Rodney Feldmann Memorial Scholarship follow this link, or send checks directly to the Department of Earth Sciences and note Feldmann Scholarship in the memo.
Sincerely, Daniel
Daniel Holm, Professor and Chair

Yesterday, over 60 students attended the combined Kent/Stark campuses CORE geology field trip at the Cuyahoga Valley National Park led by Dr. Carrie Schweitzer. Students examined sedimentary rocks, weathering processes, and geological history on the Ledges Trail.
Several Earth Science students attended the Geological Society of America National Meeting in Pittsburgh this week. Emily Rider presented a poster on her research with Eric Taylor in Earth Materials. Emily, Ryan Oatman, and Mero Yant presented data from our teaching water well field, one of our premier teaching assets at the Stark Campus. The Geology and Environmental clubs sponsored a behind-the-scenes tour at the Carnegie Museum in conjunction with the meeting.
The natural science programs at Stark are an outstanding asset for student growth!
KENT STATE UNIVERSITY TENURE-TRACK FACULTY POSITION IN THE
EARTH SCIENCES
The Department of Earth Sciences at Kent State University (http://www.kent.edu/earth-sciences) invites applications for a tenure-track open-rank faculty member whose research focuses on interactions between the hydrosphere and other aspects of the earth sciences (lithosphere, biosphere, cryosphere and/or atmosphere). The position starts August 2024. The successful candidate will hold a Ph.D. in the Earth or Marine Sciences, and be able to interface well with faculty working at the nexus of environmental and earth system sciences research. Specific research interests are open, but preference will be given to applicants who complement departmental faculty strengths. Examples of inter-related hydrology-earth system science disciplines include fluvial processes, watershed hydrology, process geomorphology, critical zone science, water resources, water quality, marine science, and paleoclimatology. Preference will be given to applicants using both field and laboratory methods.
Responsibilities will include developing a strong, externally funded research program, advising Ph.D. and M.S. students, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in their specialty, and an introductory course in physical or environmental earth sciences.
The Department of Earth Sciences has 10 full-time faculty members, 55 undergraduates and 25 graduate students. Current faculty research includes the areas of paleoceanography, biogeochemistry, sedimentary geology, paleontology, critical zone science, environmental remote sensing, water-mineral surface interactions, flow and transport in porous media, and tectonics and landform development. The successful applicant will be able to contribute to and benefit from Kent State’s Environmental Science and Design Research Initiative (ESDRI), which includes recent hires in Earth Sciences, Geography, and Biological Sciences. The ESCI department at Kent State University houses a broad array of analytical instruments (www.kent.edu/earth-sciences/facilities).
Kent State University, an R1 doctoral university, is dedicated to faculty and student success. It has been named as a “Great College to Work For” by the Chronicle of Higher Education 11 times, and was one of only six schools nationwide to receive the 2018 Healthy Campus Award.
