Brain and spine metastasis refer to the spread of cancer cells from a primary tumor site somewhere else in the body, to the brain or spine. The cancer cells from the original tumor travel through the bloodstream or lymphatic system, and form a new tumor or new tumors in the brain or spine.

Once the tumor has spread to the brain or spine, it is not called “brain or spine cancer” instead it is named after the part of the body where the cancer started. A secondary brain or spine tumor is most commonly referred to as a metastatic tumor.

The most common cancers that spread are Lung, breast, kidney, colon, and melanoma (skin) cancers.

Join us in raising awareness about metastatic cancer this month!

We are proud to announce that Los Angeles City Council President Paul Krekorian, declared the month of May 2024 as the OFFICIAL Brain Tumor Awareness Month in the City of Los Angeles.

Council President Krekorian presented the resolution to the USC Brain Tumor Center of Keck Medicine of USC on Tuesday May 28th 2024. During his remarks he stated that “Increased public awareness of brain tumors through advocacy and support for vital research, as well as education about the impact brain tumors have on the lives of patients and their families are critical to finding a cure”.

By declaring May as Brain Tumor Awareness month, the City of Los Angeles took a tremendous leap to raise public awareness about the causes, symptoms, and treatment options available for those affected by brain tumors. We are extremely grateful that the City of Los Angeles also recognized the hard work our team (medical professionals, researchers, staff, and advocates) at the USC Brain Tumor Center of Keck Medicine of USC is doing to conquer and cure brain tumors.

Excellent article!

So yesterday was my first work anniversary with the American Brain Tumor Association.🎊 This is especially meaningful to me since before starting my employment with the ABTA, I was medically retired for eight years. I thought I lost my career when I was diagnosed with . I could only imagine that one day I would find my way back -- and with the constant love and support of those around me, I did. 💗🙏

I'm grateful to Shoutout L.A. for the opportunity to share some of what I've been up to this past year in my role with the ABTA and for giving me a platform to publicly thank so many who helped in my recovery.
