Skylar’s Scholarships
We are a small group of volunteers that are dedicated to helping the German Shepherd Dog through fundraising efforts and donations.
Skylar's Scholarships is a 501(c) organization.
Gunner had his yearly vet appointment to get all caught up on his vaccines, but before he went to the vet, he got to visit all his friends at the company where his mom use to work before she passed away. He got lots of love from all the employees.
Gunner would love a home of his own, he’s been living with a family ever since his mom passed away, but he deserves a new family to call his own. Gunner needs to be an only dog (he loves all the attention), he’s 8 years old, he’s neutered, up to date on vaccines and microchipped. He would be perfect for someone who likes to take small walks and just let him hang out with you at night while you watch a good movie. This guy loves balls, so we will make sure to send a few of his favorites along with him to his new home.
If you’re interested in learning more about Gunner, please fill out an application on our website at www.skylarsscholarships.org (the application is listed under the “more” tab) and we will make sure it gets to the family who is caring for him.
If you could please share his post, we know there is someone out there for Gunner who will love him as much as his mom did.
Andy had a good life with a family that loved him at one point and time. When money got tight they lost their home, they lived in a car and sometimes when they could, other peoples homes. Andy’s owner wanted more for him, so he dropped him off at a shelter in hopes that someone would give him the medical care he so badly needed.
Andy was luckily picked up by Simply Shepherds Rescue, his a**l fistula was extremely bad and he tested positive for heartworm. We worked with Simply Shepherds to help make Andy healthy again. He received treatment for his heartworm and medications for his fistulas. Since then, Andy has been living the good life here in Minnesota, so his owners wish did come true.
Andy’s health has been declining for the past couple of weeks and his attitude has taken a turn as well. This morning he was evaluated by one of our veterinarians, and along with the rest of TEAM ANDY, we made the decision to help him cross the rainbow bridge so he can be pain free and run free.
Rescue is hard. Love hurts, and peace is beautiful.
RIP sweet Andy, you will never be forgotten.

This 9-year-old German Shepherd is such a good boy and would love to find a home where he can share his sweet personality. Andy gets along well with female dogs and has a soft spot for stuffy toys.
He’s patiently waiting near Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN—could you be the one to make his dreams come true? Contact Skylar’s Scholarships for more info! 🐶❤️

Tuesday we took Biggie from Companion Animal Control to get all his vetting needs taken care of.
Biggie was brought into animal control by someone who said they found him and his sidekick Smalls in a park. They have both been there for a few weeks with no rescue interest.
They were both evaluated by a professional K9 trainer to see if they had what it takes to go on and do a job, they didn’t. Then, as luck would have it, we were contacted by NorthernWoods Dog Training, they were looking for a dog who would be able to become a service dog and join their program. We then invited the trainer out to evaluate both of them. Biggie was chosen for their program.
All this takes time, patience and the right people to come into these dogs lives. Biggie leaves on Tuesday to start his training.
From Surrendered to Saved.
Remember Bishop who was surrendered to Companion Animal Control when his owner could no longer care for him due to health issues?
Bishop remained at CAC for a few weeks, they gave him medicated baths for his skin issues, they feed him good food and gave him lots of love and attention. This is an animal control that cares. We saw what a great dog Bishop is and sponsored his vetting needs, in hopes that someone would tag him and bring him into their program. Well, Northwoods Humane Society saw his gentle soul and decided they wanted to be the ones to continue on with Bishop and his journey to find that home.
If you’re interested in a darling, 4.5 year old GSD, watch for Bishop to become available on their website.
After we took Skeeter in to get all his vetting, instead of going back to Companion Animal Control, he found a new place to call home! His new family said he is the sweetest boy, he’s smart and they said they needed him as much as he needed them.
From Lost to Loved!
We were contacted today about this beautiful girl named Re*****on. Due to someone having allergies she can no longer stay in the home she is currently at. If you have German Shepherd experience and are looking for a new dog, please reach out to us and we can put you in touch with the person who is trying to help find her a new home.
Re*****on was born 4-21-18, she is up to date on vaccines and spayed. She has gone through obedience training and is very well behaved. Re*****on CAN NOT be around small dogs or small children.
Andy! He really is a good boy, so if you’re willing to fall in love with a senior, we have been helping Andy along the way for awhile now 🙂
Andy is a 9-year-old German Shepherd with a heart full of love and a passion for stuffy toys! Andy is a sweet boy who gets along great with female dogs and is looking for his forever home.
Want to make Andy a part of your family? Contact Skylar’s Scholarships for more info on how to adopt this beautiful boy who is currently being fostered in the Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN, area. Let’s find this lovable pup his perfect home! 🐶💕
Bishop and Skeeter have been hanging out at Companion Animal Control, we committed to getting Bishop the vetting he needed and decided to sponsor Skeeter too. Today they will get neutered, receive the required vaccines and a microchip. With so many dogs needing a place to go right now, this mission of helping animal control dogs is so important. They didn’t ask to be there, but we can help by getting them ready to be placed into new loving homes.
Thank you KONG for the box of goodies for the dogs we are sponsoring ♥️ 🐾 ♥️
Surprise Box Sunday.
Imagine doing something you love, that was exactly what Sara Rhodes was doing, transporting 2 cruelty case dogs to safety. She was also picking up a new foster dog for herself that day. After dropping off the dogs and securing her foster, she headed back out for the drive home. Along the way, she was involved in an accident with a semi-tractor, both Sara and Tootsie (her new foster dog) died that day.
Sara was a volunteer member of Hospice Hearts Animal Rescue in Urbana. The dogs are safe with German Shepherd Rescue, Inc, thanks to Sara. They decided to remember her by naming the dogs she brought to them that day, Sara and Rhodes. Please keep all who loved Sara and Tootsie in your prayers.
Rest easy Sara.
Thank you Dylan & Rainey for helping Andy by being the Adoptable Dog for August!
MEET OUR ADOPTABLE DOG FOR AUGUST—Andy!
Are you looking for a dog…look no further!!!
Andy is a 9-year-old GSD who was given up to a shelter in Illinois when his family could no longer care for him. He was rescued by Simply Shepherds Rescue. Andy had a horrible case of a**l fistula when he was rescued and was also heartworm positive. Skylar’s Scholarships stepped in to help with his medical care. Once Andy was on the mend, his foster mom, the founder of Simply Shepherds Rescue fell ill and could no longer care for him, so he was transported to MN, where another foster family has been taking care of him. Andy is now heartworm negative and his a**l fistula is stable with his medications.
Andy does well with female dogs, he is neutered, up to date on vaccines, microchipped and crate trained. Andy loves his stuffy toys!
Andy is getting lots of love near Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN. If you are looking for a dog that will be by your loyal companion, Andy is your boy!
To find out more about Andy, please contact Skylar’s Scholarships.
Near Suamico, Wi. Reach out to Mit Liebe German Shepherd Dog Rescue if interested.
Biggie and Smalls are current residents at Companion Animal Control. Don’t let their Malinois look cloud your image of them. Not knowing for sure if they are purebred or they could be mixed with GSD, these guys are SUPER nice, confident dogs. They went to Home Depot and they walked right through the doors, didn’t bark at anything and acted like they owned the place.
Biggie loves to play ball, he’s fast. Smalls plays ball, but he’s a bit more “hey, this is kinda fun”. They each “aced” their bath and nail trims. Seems as though they had never been in a car before, but didn’t mind having someone pick up their rear to help them in. They walk well on a leash and respect your corrections. They were dog tested with a female bulldog, and both did well, but no longer do well with each other. These boys would make fantastic walking partners.
They appear to be young, they have nice white teeth and are happy go lucky boys. If you foster for a rescue or if you are considering fostering, check out the list of approved organizations on Companion Animal Control’s website and have your intake coordinator contact them.
*They do not adopt animals directly to the public, if a rescue organization tags Biggie and/or Smalls, we will make sure they have their age appropriate vaccines and microchips before they leave.
Bodie was released from Southview Animal Hospital today! All his tests came back and the good news is he does not have EPI, but he did test positive for the Canine Pneumovirus (which they said they rarely ever see). Symptoms of this virus include, coughing, sneezing, nasal discharge, fever, lethargy and loss of appetite. In sever cases (like Bodie’s), it can develop into Pneumonia, characterized by difficulty breathing, worsening cough, fever and lack of appetite, which when left untreated can be life-threatening.
Canine Pneumovirus is spread through the air via respiratory secretions from infected dogs, it can also be transmitted through direct contact with contaminated surfaces, such as food and water bowls, toys or shared bedding. We don’t know how Bodie contracted this, but we know that if you hear your dog coughing, sneezing, combined with not wanting to eat and acting lethargic, it’s a sign to get them to the vet.
Bodie was lucky to have so much support, we thank you for the donations and prayers for him.
Bodie is now home with his new mom and brother Lobo. His new mom could not wait to get him home and spoil him while he continues to recover.
Thank you Southview Animal Hospital for taking such good care of Bodie, we appreciate you!
Ames received his box of surprises, this is what he thought about the frog stuffy. Well done Ames, well done 😆
Thank you to our Angel donor and to Animal Rescue Aid! We appreciate you!
Meet the classic girl, Umi
Umi is one year and 4 months old, she is a purebred female German Shepherd Dog. Her mom loves her dearly and is devastated that she can no longer provide her with what she needs. Umi’s mom has experienced a series of unfortunate events, that have left her mobility challenged and she is losing her home due to flooding. She also has to move into an assisted living home and cannot take her along.
What we know about Umi:
She is people friendly, she greets nicely and does not seem to jump unless she is extremely excited
She has spent a lot of time at dog parks and with other dogs. She gets a little “barky” on a leash when she sees another dog, but it’s very workable and she’s easily distracted.
She currently lives with a cat, she is cat curious, but the cat she lives with will bat her and she runs away (cat 455 - Umi 0)
She has been around children 5 years of age and up, and she enjoys them, but she has not lived with children and has not been around very little children, but she’s never reacted to a child negatively.
No food aggression
She is extremely ball focused, and you could wear her out playing ball while you sit in chair. She loves car rides. She is crate trained (whimpers a little but nothing significant), she’s house trained, knows basic commands, smart, learns quickly and is treat motivated, unless there’s a ball, balls trump treats. If you have a ball, you are her instant bestie!
Umi is fully up to date on vaccines and has had her first heat. She will need to be spayed, no breeding allowed. This will be enforced by a contract or she will be spayed prior to any adoption.
If you are interested in Umi, please reach out and we can put you in touch with the person in charge of Umi. This is a dire situation as Umi’s mom cannot take her with and only has a couple weeks in her current place.
Umi can be fostered, foster to adopt or adopted.
Please help her find a new home!
We’re still waiting for most of Bodie’s test results to come back, his broad spectrum f***l sample came back negative for everything.
They sent us some photos from his isolation unit (insert the ASPCA music here 🎶)
On a better note, he’s a fan favorite of everyone, he’s using his charm to get more treats and ❤️
Karma recently celebrated her 1st “gotcha” day with her new family. Seeing how loved she is, is why we do what we do! Whether we support animals in your care, or ones we care for, we love a good update!
Happy Gotcha Day Karma ❤️
Surprise Box Sunday!
How cute is Ames? He’s 12 years old and was left behind in a closed garage at an abandoned home.
German Shepherd Rescue, Inc welcomed him into their program because someone said yes to fostering him. Ames was filthy, his coat was so matted it couldn’t be saved, their vet had to shave him. Being a senior, he has some mobility issues and sometimes he will slip or topple over. We were told he loves toys, so he will get extras toys in his box.
Best of luck Ames, we know you are in good hands.
.
UPDATE #2:
We now know Bodie does not have Addison’s disease, so we are thankful for that. While we wait for the other tests to come back, which probably won’t be until Monday, he will remain in the care of Southview Animal Hospital so he can be isolated and get everything he needs with round the clock care. On another note, he is eating well still and making so many new friends at the vet office, he’s a real charmer! We love you Bodie!
UPDATE #1:
We heard from the doctor this morning, we know Bodie has pneumonia at this point, we know he is severely dehydrated, what we don’t know is if this could be something more. The doctor suggested they do muliple other tests, one for EPI, one for Addisons, one for influenza and a broad spectrum f***l sample. If these tests come back normal, we will then move to an abdominal CT scan and see what that shows. Bodie was in much better spirits this morning, he did eat and is looking for all the love he can get from the doctor. They will now start giving him oral meds and hope that he responds well.
If you can help us help Bodie, donations can be made on our website at www.skylarsscholarships.org or you can call Southview Animal Hospital and request to make a donation there 651-455-2258, make sure you tell them it is for Bodie in the care of Skylar’s Scholarships. Keep praying!
Bodie just might be one of the sweetest dogs you could ever meet. He has not experienced much in this world, but he loves life nonetheless. We had a lovely women and her dog Lobo who wanted to meet Bodie, we did 2 meets and greets, one short, one that lasted more than an hour to see how Lobo and Bodie would get along, she was already in love with him, so it was up to the boys.
The boys decided and it was a done deal, Bodie would be apart of their family. The plan was to get Bodie neutered and give him time to heal and then he would be going to his new home.
Bodie was picked up yesterday, but we noticed he was coughing a little bit, so we told his new mom to keep an eye on him. Today, he worsened, he was lethargic. We got him an emergency appointment at Southview Animal Hospital this evening where they took one look at him and said they were very concerned. For tonight, he will stay in the hospital, they will do bloodwork, x-rays, ct scans and monitor him closely. We hope to hear from them later tonight. In the meantime, please keep Bodie in your thoughts and prayers, his new mom of one day is worried about him, as are we.
We committed to Bodie, we are here for him and will continue to support him until he gets better.
We will commit to get Bishop his first vet visit, get him up to date on vaccines and microchipped when a rescue organization and foster are found. If you are a foster or an organization who is approved with Companion Animal Control please reach out to them.
NOTE: They do not do private adoptions
Andy is till searching for his happily ever after, and we’re going to keep posting him in hopes that one day that wish will be granted for him.
Andy is 9 years old, his family gave him up when they could no longer care for him, that was about a year ago, yes, one year ago. Andy still has so much life to live with the right person/family. He can go on long walks, he can play ball, he can be your yard buddy. He came to MN when his former foster and rescue director of Simply Shepherds Rescue fell ill and could no longer care for him.
Andy has a**l fistula, but it is controlled with medications, he is crate trained, neutered, up to date on vaccines and microchipped. He does well with female dogs and LOVES his stuffy toys.
If you are interested in learning more about Andy, please fill out an application on our website at www.skylarsscholarships.org (the application is listed under the “more” tab).
