Matthews Woman's Club Service League
Since 1988, The Matthews Woman's Club Service League has been dedicated to community improvement. Our motto is "Service Support Sisterhood".
The Matthews Woman's Club Service League began in 1988 and was an offshoot from The Matthews Woman's Club. From humble beginnings, it grew into an organization that gives back to the Matthews community with time, talent, an service.
We are so delighted with our tree for the 2024 Novant Festival of trees! We think it turned out beautifully! 🤩 🎄Thanks to our wonderful decorators, Patricia Bunting Theis and Steffney Messer!
Several of our members enjoyed a fun and elegant outing for Afternoon Tea at The Ballantyne Resort today. A lovely time together!
Our April meeting was all about giving back to our community! We presented checks from the proceeds of our fundraising activities to non-profits in the area who share our commitment to serving those in need: Matthews Help Center, Habitat For Humanity, Matthews Free Medical Clinic, Blessed Assurance Adult Daycare, Common Heart, and COS Kids. We also welcomed Mayor John Higdon and former Mayor Jim Taylor as our special guests
Karen Greene, retired Matthews Police Officer and former club member has done many wonderful things for us (such as keeping us safe during our teas). Now she is need of help from us. Karen recently suffered a devastating house fire. Below is a GoFundMe link to help her family. Alternatively, Karen needs gift cards. For information on how to send gift cards please call the MWCSL number at 704-849-5063.

Last week, a team of MWCSL members took part in a fundraising walk for Common Heart. Common Heart is a volunteer organization in Union County that is commited to eliminating food insecurity and generational poverty in the community. We are proud to partner with them in this ongoing mission. Well done, ladies!
Our Wednesday dinner friendship group dining at LongHorn Steakhouse. What a bunch of lovely ladies!
Some of our club members took a "field trip" to tour the Charlotte Amazon Warehouse facility recently.
We had a wonderful meeting last Thursday. We were treated to some delicious Valentine-themed decorations and food thanks to members Mary Ayers, Karen Channel, Karen Kemp, Kathy Shonts, and Courtney Speer. During our devotional time we discovered that The Beatles had a point when they (and WE!) sang "All You Need Is Love", and we enjoyed an interesting and informative presentation by speaker Navondria Huggins of Blessed Assurance Adult Daycare. As a service project this month, we collected 497 pairs of socks and 13 jackets to be distributed to those in need.
A few more photos from our 1000 sandwich making project courtesy of member Penny Higdon.
Our members had a busy weekend! On Saturday, a group of our clubwomen joined others at Matthews United Methodist Church in making 1,0000 sandwiches. The sandwiches fed those served by Roof Above, a comprehensive homelessness service provider in the Charlotte area. (Not pictured are participants Margaret Draganac, Kay Harward, and Marilyn Lord James.)
More lovely photos from our Tea of the food and decor. Thanks to member Lori Meath for sharing!
Thanks so much to these amazing young volunteers who helped us with the Teas. Sydney, Ben, and Sully, we appreciated your help so very much. Great job!
We had a wonderful time at our Victorian Holiday Teas this year!

We were very sorry to be without Commissioner Gina Hoover at our Forum on Monday evening. Due to an email glitch, she was unable to reach us to let us know she would not be there and also she had a statement to be read. We apologize for not receiving the statement, and we would like to take the opportunity to present it here. We also offer up our prayers and good wishes for Commissioner Hoover and her family.
STATEMENT - My apologies for not being able to attend tonight but a dear family member is currently in need of his family. I am a Matthews native, and it would be an honor to continue my service to you and the community I love. I am currently serving my first term. I believe the role of an elected official is to represent the people who elected them. I understand the decisions I make will affect the community I serve; therefore, it is not taken for granted. I will not be influenced; I will not financially profit from the decisions made while serving on the council. I am not a political insider and I will work for you, not for some special interest group. I humbly ask for your vote and it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
