Holiday Blues
The Holidays often offer feelings of joy, warmth, and belonging, but for some the holiday seasons can present feelings of loneliness, stress, and anxiety. The holidays are vastly approaching where depression will be more prevalent. As we approach the Holiday Seasons, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and the coming of a New Year particularly, let’s be mindful of those around us who might be depressed, hurting, and or grieving.
While a lot of emphasis is placed on celebrating the New Year, it can be a difficult time for those who have lost loved ones. The holidays tend to bring families together and the absence of a loved who has been present for the holiday gatherings, but is no longer present can lead to depression. It is imperative that we pay close attention to our loved ones and those in our circle who have experience some type of trauma. The warning signs are always prevalent and some are listed below.
Eating or sleeping too much or too little
Pulling away from people and usual activities
Having low or no energy
Feeling numb or like nothing matters
Having unexplained aches and pains
Feeling helpless or hopeless
Smoking, drinking, or using drugs more than usual
Feeling unusually confused, forgetful, on edge, angry, upset, worried, or scared
If you notice a significant change in someone’s behavior, never assume they are okay; ask them are they are okay. If they say they are not, offer a listening ear; sometimes that is all that is needed. I’ve worked in the Mental Health Field for over 25 years, and I see depression more prevalent in the clients I work with during Holidays than ever before. It’s during these times they began to talk about missing their children or siblings who no longer want to be a part of their lives because they don’t understand their mental Illness. Or clients talk about their children who have been taken from them because of their mental Illness. I offer a listening ear, one-on-one and group counseling to help my clients get through the Holiday Season, which weighs heavy on their mental illness than any other time. I create an atmosphere that presents joy and happiness. I plan activities to keep them engaged.
I lost my mother to cancer in 2002, and my father passed away in 2007. My parents were the life of the family gatherings, especially the holidays. The holidays have not been the same without them, but we have learned how to make them enjoyable without them. Instead of isolating yourself and being depressed, find ways to make the holidays enjoyable. Instead of staying in bed, get up, put on that nice outfit you purchased for the Holiday party; attend Holiday parties; surround yourself with friends and family who love you. Get in the kitchen and prepare the holiday dinner together as a family. These are just a few things you can do to prevent being depressed.
Beating the holiday blues is about staying true to who you are. Don’t lose you because you lost someone you loved. It’s okay to be sad about losing a loved one, but find ways to turn that sadness into joy. You’re a person who love to give back; use that as a means to keep the memory of your loved one alive; go feed the homeless; go help distribute cloths and blankets to those who are in need. Staying busy and offering hope to those who are less fortunate will help turn your sorrow into joy.
The Holiday blues typically passes once the Holiday seasons are over. After the Holidays have passed and you noticed someone still experiencing signs of depression, please reach out to them; help them get some help. Below is a list of resources, no one has to suffer in silence.
