HEALTH DEPARTMENT MOSQUITO CONTROL ACTIVITIES
SCHEDULED FOR THE WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 18, 2023
SHELBY COUNTY, TN – The Shelby County Health Department’s Mosquito Control Program routinely traps and tests mosquitoes for the presence of West Nile Virus (WNV) as a part of a comprehensive program to limit the spread of the virus in Shelby County.
Mosquito Control activities begin in February each year, with the application of larvicides to ditches and standing bodies of water in order to kill mosquito larvae and decrease the adult mosquito population. These treatments are a very effective way of reducing mosquito populations. Please view our ArcGIS story map that details our mosquito control prevention work throughout the year.
Additionally, Mosquito Control conducts truck-mounted spraying to control the spread of adult mosquitoes that carry West Nile virus. Mosquitoes positive for West Nile virus have been detected in zip codes: 38053, 38127, 38107, 38108, 38053, 38002, 38004, 38128, 38135, 38128, 38134, 38133, 38016, 38018, and 38109. There have been six (6) human West Nile Virus cases reported so far in 2023. Truck-mounted spraying for mosquitoes is one of many mosquito control activities conducted by SCHD’s Vector Control Program. Weather permitting*, SCHD will conduct truck-mounted spraying of EPA-approved insecticides, in the following ZIP codes according to this schedule:
