ESSENCE has exclusively confirmed that former First Lady Michelle Obama will speak at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago this week.
This highly anticipated speech will place Mrs. Obama among a lineup of prominent Democratic leaders rallying to support Vice President Harris and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as they officially become the party’s nominees for the 2024 election.
This announcement follows last month’s viral video featuring Mrs. Obama, former President Barack Obama, and VP Harris, in which the Obamas officially endorsed her for president, which now has more than 117 million views.
The Former First Lady’s influence extends beyond her endorsement. She leads “When We All Vote,” a nonpartisan initiative to increase voter participation, particularly among underrepresented groups.

Our Story
NABFEME was founded in the summer of 1999 by entertainment industry executive, Johnnie Walker. Ms Walker recognized that most entertainment industry conferences, seminars and events rarely focused on women or provided a female perspective; plus, the content offered rarely produced career support for women. Another interesting note was many entertainment companies had few women of color in positions of power. This frustration, compounded with being a woman with aggressive career goals, was the catalyst for creating NABFEME.. the National Association of Black Female Executives in Music & Entertainment, Inc. .
Ms Walker's desire for change inspired the creation of a vehicle that would work to support and increase the awareness of women in entertainment, raise the profile of women of color in the business and provide opportunities for women to network, learn, empower themselves and have access to industry leaders. Once the concept for the organization was formalized and the business and marketing plans were developed, Ms Walker recruited several women who represented various disciplines within music and entertainment to become a part of the founding board… and NABFEME was born.
The organization was formed to create a support and empowerment resource base for professional women of color in music and entertainment. Based in New York, the focus of the organization would be economic and career development for its members. The first meetings were held via teleconference and included Toni Bell, Michelle Madison, Gwen Priestly, Vanessa Barryer, Ramona Harrison-Hardy and NABFEME Founder, Johnnie Walker. The original six were visionary women who understood the importance of lending their time, energy and experience to creating an organization that would be dedicated to empowering, mentoring and promoting women of color in entertainment.
NABFEME has evolved into a first class worldwide organization with 20 Networks in the USA and 2 Networks that operate internationally in Canada and Africa. The organization continues to grow and expand,... remaining constant has been the vision and the values that were conceived at the very first meeting of the women of NABFEME.
