Memphis APRI works to strengthen the ties between the labor movement and community.
By boosting the political impact of black voters, and increasing black participation in labor’s base of support we have become a leading voice.
Wednesday, August 28th we’re having a postcard party! Join us at our office from 5 PM - 7 PM for a night of good food, music and postcards to voters about this very important upcoming election! Sign up at the mobilize link below! See you there!
Union Strong! On the strike line with CWA workers as they fight against unfair labor practices. Give the people what they want!
We need to be sure that we are reaching our ENTIRE community! Please contact your local APRI chapter to find out how you can help! Please visit our website to find your local chapter! www.apri.org
In 1955, Lamar Smith, a WWI veteran and early voting rights activist, was killed in Brookhaven, Mississippi, in broad daylight at the Lincoln County Courthouse for escorting other black voters and helping them complete absentee ballots.
His murder was witnessed by over 30 people, yet the three men responsible were not indicted.
There are many stories like Lamar Smith’s, where individuals risked their lives for the fundamental right to vote. Remembering them honors their sacrifice and powerfully reminds us to stay civically engaged to protect our rights.
We've been doing this for a long time, making a difference! We need all of our chapters to start letting us, and the world know, what APRI is doing!
In celebration of Black Business Month, we honor Walter Bailey’s legacy. In 1945, Bailey bought and renamed the Marquette Hotel to the Lorraine, honoring his wife Loree and the song “Sweet Lorraine.” His vision turned it into a key destination for Black travelers during segregation.
The Lorraine Motel, now the National Civil Rights Museum, reflects a history of resilience and progress. As we support Black-owned businesses, let’s honor Bailey’s impact and how history moves us forward toward justice and equality.
