Sudan ceasefire and aid access talks began in Geneva this morning with the army boycotting the US-led talks and the RSF delegation backing out at the last minute.
The message being sent from Sudan’s warring generals is clear: they are intentionally choosing to submit the Sudanese people to more extreme violence and worsen the spreading famine.

Sudan is ground zero for the largest and most dangerous humanitarian emergency in the world. The unfolding catastrophe is entirely manmade, driven by a brutal civil war between the army and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The result?
🇸🇩Nearly 26 million Sudanese —half of the entire country— are facing high levels of acute food insecurity. 14 area famine warnings have been declared and over 750,000 Sudanese are struggling to survive in famine conditions.
🏃🏿➡️Nearly 11 million people have been forced to flee their homes or have left Sudan altogether.
🖍️Over 19 million children no longer have a classroom to attend.
🪦A conservative estimated death toll is 65,000 people. Some estimates claim over 150,000 people have already perished.
Very little of this makes the news, which makes our direct support to the Sudanese people all the more critical. Take action: https://operationbrokensilence.org
Independent experts have confirmed famine is ongoing inside Zamzam Displacement Camp near El Fasher, North Darfur. The area is currently under siege by the genocidal Rapid Support Forces.
The camp is also home to Team Zamzam, a group of 20 female counselors who are providing emergency aid to the most needy, with fundraising support from Operation Broken Silence.

It cannot be overstated that the unfolding famine in Sudan is manmade. Extreme violence, aid being blocked, depleted harvests, and soaring prices have led to 14 official famine warnings being declared in the besieged country.
This is the bleak environment our Sudanese partners are operating in. Every day they witness preventable death and suffering brought on by a senseless war and a criminal lack of global attention. They need ongoing support and all the help they can get.

“I don’t think people in the world know how bad it is for students in Sudan. A girl who came to Yida early this year joined our class. She says most schools in Sudan are closed because of war. I try to imagine all the empty classrooms. It is hard. All the children of our generation need the opportunity we have here. We come to school everyday for them and not just ourselves.
We are thankful for bringing us school supplies and helping our teachers. My people feel alone right now but at school we can see that we heard and believed in by people all over the world. Thank you for supporting our schools.”

As hundreds of thousands of Sudanese cross international borders and become refugees, they are often shocked to learn that the world has no knowledge of the terror being inflicted on them. Coming to grips with the reality that other people haven’t noticed —or worse, have noticed and don’t care— only compounds the already severe trauma they are living with.

The spiraling crisis in Sudan is so ignored by the world that there is not even a credible death toll. It is widely believed that the most conservative estimates of 15,000-30,000 people is a severe undercount. Here, U.S. Special Envoy Tom Perriello shares about this issue and how the U.S. government is trying to support local leaders on the ground.

The unfolding famine in Sudan is manmade, brought on by the army and Rapid Support Forces blocking humanitarian relief, destroying food storehouses and crops, and preventing farmers from working. The result? Almost 18 million Sudanese —a third of the country— are facing life-threatening levels of food insecurity. At least 730,000 Sudanese children are suffering from severe acute malnutrition.

Despite Sudan being the largest and most dangerous humanitarian emergency in the world, the crisis has received hardly any attention compared to other global conflicts. U.S. Special Envoy Tom Perriello shares why he thinks that is, echoing the same reasons we provided in our April 15 article “Sudan trapped in a ‘doom loop of silence’ after one year of war and humanitarian nightmare.” Read it here: https://operationbrokensilence.org/blog/sudan-trapped-in-a-doom-loop-of-silence-after-one-year-of-war-and-humanitarian-nightmare

Spreading hunger in Sudan is quickly turning into famine. Almost 18 million Sudanese —a third of the country— are facing life-threatening levels of food insecurity. Conservative projections are that 230,000 children, pregnant women, and new mothers will die from hunger in the coming months if the situation does not improve soon.
