Today marks the 80th anniversary of D-Day, the largest amphibious invasion in military history. Also known as The Invasion of Normandy, the invasion of 7,000+ ships and 195,000+ personnel from eight allied countries marked a key turning point in WWII.

To commemorate those lost and those who fought valiantly for our freedoms eight decades ago, we urge you to learn more about military history right here in our own region at locations like the Midland Army Air Field Museum and associated CAF High Sky Wing.

This morning we found ourselves over Sweetwater Avenger Field home of the WASP’s while flying the same type PT-19 Cornell those ladies trained in so long ago. Today we remember the 38 brave female aviators who gave their lives in the service of our country.

Last Friday, I was honored to attend a very special Eagle Scout ceremony. Joniee Wright became the first woman in West Texas to earn the rank rank of Eagle Scout. Joniee exemplifies service to others, and she earned she worked hard to earn this honor. As a fellow Eagle, I told her if she became an Eagle Scout, I would present her with a Texas flag that once flew over the Capitol in recognition of her remarkable achievement. I’m glad I got to make good on that promise.

Today we had the pleasure of welcoming these visitors to the Midland Army Airfield Museum. On the left is Bud Nolen and his wife Tammy along with young Caysen Nolen and his mom Kathryn. Bud is the grandson of CAF founder Lloyd P. Nolen and Caysen is his great great Grandson. It was great hearing Bud talk about growing up down in Harlingen and we look forward to hearing more on their next visit.

The CAF High Sky Wings AT-6 Texan 101 over the skies of San Angelo during a recent formation training clinic. In 101 is pilot Lance Sommers and warbird photographer Nick Viggiano. In the second AT-6 are owner Joe Gamertsfelder and Daniel Rathbun, both HSW members. Both aircraft can often be seen with others at air shows and across the skies of the Permian Basin.

The Memorial Plaques from the Memorial Garden have now been moved into the chapel for display. This is just one of the many changes at the wing.

We would love to see new members with all skill sets ranging from pilots to mechanics to museum docents and every other task it takes to keep this museum running so smooth. Come visit us on Saturdays (10am to 3pm) or watch for our numerous events and come say hello.
